should I pursue an internship during my freshman year?

I am starting my freshman year of college, and I want to obtain a better job in the field of my major, Information Technology. I have a background in coding, as I started using Lua for game development in Roblox back in 2020. Recently, I have also begun learning Python to earn my certification. Additionally, I have a basic knowledge of computers. Considering these factors, should I pursue an internship during my freshman year?

Hello Emmanuel!

This is a great question! I would recommend that if you have the opportunity to gain an internship your freshman year, then DEFINITELY TAKE IT! If the opportunity arises, then attack it. However, if you are not able to find one now, then that is also nothing to be stressed about. Alot of companies don't reach out for further internships until sophomore, junior, and even senior year! If nothing happens right now, you still have so much time to plan for your future and gain what you need!

Congratulations for your accomplishment on Python certification! You should seek for paid internship in your freshman year. College career / placement office most likely will give priority for seniors and juniors. My recommendation will be you upload your current resume in job sites like indeed.com, ziprecruiter.com giving your objective of getting paid internship. You should also setup job listing alerts in the same sites for "entry level" positions.

Hi Emmanuel,

I think it is never too early to pursue an internship or even a part-time job on campus. While I was in college I worked on campus which I felt was a good experience and I did two internships during college and two after I graduated. Each internship helped me better understand what I wanted to do and what kind of company I wanted to work for. Talk to your college career services office and they can help you make a resume as well as apply to internships!

Not a bad idea, but with many companies, one of the requirements may be at least sophomore or junior status in college. However, if you can find an internship that will groom you as a freshman, GO FOR IT!

You have received some well-thought recommendations, Molly. My suggestion is the opposite: Sit out the freshman year for internship. Why? Because your 'job' in the freshman year is to get organized, learn to manage your time, be outstanding in all your studies, develop some rapport with instructors, and become involved in campus life. Internship competes with your primary goal. A better time would be, in my opinion, the summer after your sophomore year. Why? Because you will have developed substantive skills by then, such that in your internship you will be contributing, not just learning. I respect that what you want is the internship, but please do contemplate my suggestion. I wish you well.

Let me start by saying that I did a mix of experiences with my various college summers. Please enjoy this time as it is such a good moment in life. Exploring the world, volunteering, being present are good uses of these summers as well. Internships are also super valuable. They provide you with practical experiences of what the work environment is like. Work is quite different from the school environment, so good to start feeling that out. I know I got to learn what it meant to be part of a team, the different departments in a company, see some of what I learned in college play out in real life, etc. If an internship is of interest, be creative with your search, talk to your school counselors to explore avenues, be open to different types of opportunities knowing that you are very early in your journey. Think about an organization that is mostly interested in teaching you and that you may be able to help them in some way, but it is really the former for both the company and you. I am sure you can find places that need programmers with your schools to augment their team for a couple of months.

I'd suggest putting your energy into your freshman year, as I really think it's one of the pivotal years! Plus, it seems like most companies usually wait until your sophomore year to offer internships. However, if you believe you can juggle all your activities during your first year, there's no harm in giving it a shot!
