When choosing a profession, the most important thing is its suitability to your character, dreams and life goals. Imagine a clothe which is quite fashionable, but doesn't suit you. The same situation is when choosing a major. Although popularity of the major can play a role at some point, it is not everything or of crucial importance.
It is better to focus on your life aspirations, talents and specific abilities, rather than popularity!
The most popular field is one which you enjoy and are happy with.

I encourage you to rethink this, as it's your one life on Earth that is at stake. Popular does not mean useful or productive or meaningful. Following what is popular could cause you to end up with a common degree that makes it difficult to stand out from the crowd. Please do this. Thank you.

I would suggest you re-think this, for a few reasons.

One generally majors in a field they want to work in for the majority of their career. Picking a popular major in a field you don't enjoy seems like a bad idea to me.

Another reason to re-consider is supply and demand. As a worker, you provide a service. An employer will pay for that service. If there is an over-abundance of workers for the available positions, the salaries will be driven down. Now, I'm not saying you should choose a major that is UNPOPULAR, for the same reason as above.

Choose something you ENJOY. College is hard, so you should consider doing something you like so it's not quite as miserable.

A popular major may not be one that is compatible with your career aspirations as well as one that is commensurate with your strength. Hence, ask yourself what you would like to do for your future career instead. Also, find out what your strengths as well as weaknesses are before choosing a major in college. You may have to make compromises for an optimal solution.

Jack, I would advise you not to pick a major based solely on popularity. If you're in high school, ask your guidance counselor for a career aptitude test. These assessments are self-guided & you can do them on your own, as well. However, your guidance counselor may have specific ones they recommend. This will help you identify careers based on your interests. From there you will be informed enough to choose a major that will help you get to your selected career goal. Also, if you are seeking information about career stability and growth predictors for current & future job opportunities to help w your decision process, I would suggest the U.S. Department of Labor, O*NET Resource Center.

While it's great that you're thinking about your major so early, it might be a bad move to pick one based on popularity. Popular degrees that people sign up for early on, typically align to their likelihood of making money. So things like finance, computer science, engineering, and biology usually win the popularity contests. However, given how hard some of them can be, many people end up dropping out or change majors half way through their program which can delay graduation.

Instead, try to think about your passions (and it's totally fine if they change, or if you're unsure of them right now). Truth is, your career evolves a lot over time and eventually the 4 yrs you spend in college will matter less and less over time. So think through what you enjoy learning about, and if it aligns with what you want to keep learning. Good luck!
