Mechanics, If you could have prepared yourself before going into auto-motive how would you have done it?

Would you have studied a certain subject? Maybe get your own project car to practice on your own time? Would it be better to just wing it and learn what I need as I go through it?

Jorge’s Answer

The best way to prepare is by combining learning with hands-on experience. Studying topics like automotive basics, electrical systems, and engine mechanics gives you a solid foundation to understand why things go wrong, not just how to fix them. At the same time, practical experience is crucial. Working on a project car, helping with basic maintenance, or starting in an entry-level shop position teaches you things that books can't cover. Most mechanics don't start out knowing everything. A lot of learning happens on the job through asking questions, making mistakes, and learning from experienced technicians. The key is to be open to learning and improving every day. It's not about over-preparing or just getting by; it's about learning the basics, getting involved, and building your skills as you progress.
