Hey! Fashion design is a fun and unique way to express your style, emotions, and your loves. Start with reading some fashion magazines/articles and watching some videos. Get familiar with the struggles of fashion design to prepare yourself, so you don't get blindsided. Get familiar with different fabrics, patterns, textures, and how they should be handled or cared for.
There are many branches in the fashion industry. Do you want to learn how to sew to create the clothing? Do you want to sketch new designs and breathe life into older ones? Do you want to be a stylist that puts together complete outfits with accessories for people that ask for help? Do you like to follow trends or create them?
Maybe you would like to do all these things, and that's great! You can self educate on YouTube, Google and social media platforms or take some classes at your local community college or a university. Happy designing!

Hello, Paw !

To your question about what you should know for a career in fashion design, I have a simple answer for you : Everything . But I will elaborate.

You should learn every aspect of design, sketching, textiles, know how to sew with patterns, color, and any of the current fashion design software that is a help with all of this. Consider going to school. It would mean that you would have to relocate to a town that has fashion schools as I believe there are none in Buffalo. Another tip is to visit the fashion hubs in Buffalo and ask the staff where they were educated or trained. I will provide a link below to some fashion places located near you.

You will also need to keep up with each season's new styles - don't forget the accessories, too. This is quite easy to do as there are many, many websites that can keep you informed and up to date. Every September, buy the Fall issues of the fashion magazines, too.

This being said, it doesn't have to be done all at once. Take one step at a time. It is a very competitive and involved career so the more you explore, the better insight you will have as a professional. You will also need to know how to network, how to get your fashions seen and what the market is like. Because there is so much to know, that is why I do suggest going to a fashion school as the school will pace it in an organized way for you. You will also learn challenges by the projects they assign you, getting you used to taking direction. It could be done on your own, but you would need an extremely strong support system and would only have the basic knowledge of the various aspects of the industry.

I hope this sheds some light for you and I wish you all the best in your future plans !
