It might be interesting to check out some books by people who have done some good work in psychology and helping others, so you can compare your own gifts and interests to what they say, and decide how much you agree with them or what you would like to learn more about as you go along, and so on. Check out some of the books and podcasts and other things by people like Ross Campbell, Les and Leslie Parrott, John Delony, Henry Cloud, etc.

Hi Mariana, Great question. The answers provided so far are on point. I would add, the most important factor in helping a patient create change or otherwise reach their goals through talk therapy, is the therapeutic relationship. So being able to develop and foster a professional/therapeutic alliance with all different kinds of people will hold you in good stead if you pursue this sort of career. In particular, the skill of active listening is quite valuable.

Mariana, this is a smart and sensitive question. The ones I can think of are: insight, listening skills, communication skills, empathy, knoweldge, patience, soothingness, flexibility, commitment, objectivity, the ability to not project one's own issues and perceptions onto someone else, and one's own emotional health.

Evan’s Answer

In any profession that requires interaction with people or patients, there are several key qualities that are essential. Empathy, kindness, and honesty should be at the forefront of every interaction. Jobs that involve dealing with people's vulnerabilities demand a careful and attentive approach to the relationships we build with those we treat or converse with. Individuals seeking help from a psychologist aim to establish a trust-based and positive relationship to achieve their objectives.

As you embark on your educational journey in college, you should cultivate a different set of qualities. College is a stage for curiosity, a place to ask questions, and a platform to seek knowledge that will form the bedrock of your future career. Seize every chance to learn from those who possess wisdom and experience. These qualities are crucial in shaping you into the psychologist you aspire to be!
