Alecia A.’s Answer

Hi Everyone!
First you should study Fashion Design at a reputable University. Be able to sketch by hand, drape, and sew designs. Also it’s very important to possess technical designing skills, with in-depth knowledge, in at least one design program, or more. Your passion should run deep!! Networking with anyone you can, who are in the fashion industry. Build a versatile portfolio, displaying your design skills. Research and study design trends. Be willing to take criticism, and adapt. I’ve worked as a Assistant Designer, Associate Designer, Freelance Designer, Jewelry Designer.

Maggie’s Answer

Hello Malik! My fascination with fashion has always been a part of me, and it eventually led me to choose it as my major during my college years in 2005. One of the best things about fashion is its flexibility - you can dive in at any point, and there's no fixed starting line. As you journey through the fashion world, you'll gain knowledge and experience, and it's completely okay if you change your mind about your focus a couple of times. There are numerous areas to explore - from design and fashion illustration to organizing fashion shows and photoshoots. So, go ahead and discover what truly sparks your interest, fuels your motivation, and fills you with excitement.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Malik !
Fashion is an art. Although I am not in the fashion industry, I do love it and began taking an interest in it in 2003. I like Styling the best and I also like the current trend of re-styling and re-purposing as an interest. One of my favorite aspects of fashion is the History of Fashion. That most likely developed many moons ago while I was a Theatre major in college and had rigorous costuming requirements. I loved it and worked as costume coordinator on a large play. So I basically had a renewed interest years later but for everyday contemporary fashion.

I never pursued fashion as a career as I was more into theatre but where I am now is fun for me. I create editorial fashion outfits on a site called Trend Me. It is a free, international website where graphic artists create art and stylists create fashion style collections of all genres. I find it to be quite inspiring as well as a chance to practice creativity. It also gives me a chance to practice working with graphics. Even though I personally do it as a side interest, many people become very successful professionals in the business and I think one day you will see yourself there. Best wishes in all you do !

Hi Malik! Love your inquiry. I found my love of clothes actually in retail when I became a visual merchandiser. This is where I would get to style mannequins, create 'collections' to help drive sales and brand interest. I was lucky to have a string of great managers who supported me and would send me to help other stores, districts and sister brands within the company to help set up stores. As I started to gain more day to day store experience I wanted to do it at a corporate level so I went to an art school where I got my B.S. in Fashion Marketing and Management. Built my portfolio of experience, projects and hit the ground. Unfortunately when I graduated it was a hard time in our economy but I stayed true to my passion and eventually working my way back again in retail through to corporate at Gap Inc. I did a pivot into the beauty industry where I am now a product developer/marketer and now lead a corporate team of brand builders, product developers and creative geniuses. My favorite part of the job, aside from creating my own spin on trends is influencing and building skills in other people so they can keep their passion in their trade.
