What an interesting question, Emma! Peoples' behavior is influenced by so many factors, such as social styles, cultural expectations, previous experience, etc. There are many social styles models, such as DiSC, Myers-Briggs, and Tracom. They help you see your communication preferences and how they may differ from those of others; with that knowledge, you could flex so communications are smoother and more productive. There are also models for understanding cultural differences, which I have found helpful.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other answers here which encourage you to treat others with respect, no matter whether they are similar to you or not. I might take their advice one step further. If there is mutual respect, I have found that I learn the most from people who are different from me. This perspective of welcoming difference helps me get along well with a wider variety of people and be able to incorporate a wider variety of ideas in my work.

I hope that you never encounter a work situation in which you are not treated with respect. If that does happen, however, you do not have to just accept it. If you feel comfortable, you could calmly and politely point out the objectionable behavior and indicate what behavior would be better. For example, if someone keeps interrupting you, ask them to stop and let you finish. Or you could go to your manager for support. Or if your manager is being disrespectful, go to Human Resources.

This is actually a really good opportunity to enhance your skills. It may be challenging to work with people who think differently or process information differently. Having diverse thinking is usually much better for a product or project. Try to stay open-minded and have a willingness to continually learn and grow from others. Thinking that your way is the only way will hold you back in your career.

If you become frustrated, try to pause and step back. Ask the person to help you understand their point of view. Have empathy and assume good intentions.

1. Navigating different communication styles
2. There could be conflicting work styles- Everyone has their own way of approaching problems and tasks . When you are working with large teams, you may find yourself stuck as people do not agree on a single point of view.
