Nefatiera’s Answer

Sometimes, discovering if a role is the perfect match for you only happens once you give it a shot. Ask yourself this simple yet profound question: would I be enthusiastic about waking up to do this every single day? Reflect on your feelings when it's time to rise and shine for school. There are days when something thrilling is on the horizon and you're up even before your alarm buzzes. On other days, however, you might find yourself reluctantly crawling out of bed just to tick off a task for the day.

Take a moment to delve into your passions. Contemplate what truly brings you joy and seek out the link between your workplace and your passion. It might take some time to uncover something you're truly passionate about, but once you discover your passion and its connection with your work, you'll know it.

Why not consider volunteering with various organizations? Not only does it provide a valuable service to your community, but it also offers you a chance to explore the diverse activities of different companies or organizations at no cost, without any long-term obligations. This could be an excellent way to explore potential passions and identify what truly motivates you.

What a great question Carlie! Thank you for being brave enough to ask. :) I agree with Karen. Being open to different paths will always be the most rewarding. It's always ok to change your mind...and I wish someone would have shared that secret with me a few years ago. Adaptation is crucial to all adventures! I agree with Baraka as well. Financial needs may change with time, so you always want to consider that as a factor. Some of the least paying jobs that I've had in my life were also the most rewarding. Rebecca's answer was amazing too. (I think that's how you know that you're asking excellent questions!) Taking the time to really thing (and maybe even write down) about your favorite areas of study or hobbies will be extremely helpful as you're jumping in. I have two masters degrees (both focusing on literature) and I work at an accounting firm! My degrees look great on paper, but (as you know) accountants are not analyzing essays. However, my degrees are for me. They prove that I can dedicate myself to my goals and that despite everything, I decided to be better than where I was coming from. I'm happiest when I'm learning and helping others. I value growth. I thought for the longest time that I'd be a teacher (and I was for a little while...high school and then first grade...so I tried a wide variety of classrooms), but new opportunities led me down different paths. There will always be periods of uncertainty, but try not to let them scare you. They always pass with time. You're off to such a great start my friend. Keep digging and you'll find your passion. Just be brave enough to begin over and over as those passions change and develop with you. You're on your way to finding your "best fit" and I'm rooting for you!

Kristen recommends the following next steps:

Focus on what brings you the most happiness in your life.
Continue to ask questions and delve into those things that bring you joy.
Don't be discouraged if your interests change. Just go back to numbers 1 and 2 again.
Keep your head up through it all. It's totally fine to be a work in progress. :)

Karen’s Answer

Great you are thinking about having a job that's a good fit for you. In your lifetime you will probably have a number of jobs and each will offer different advantages. In some you may feel like the people you work with are the best fit for you and in another perhaps what you will be doing with bring you the greatest satisfaction. You will probably learn from each of them, even if not a perfect fit. The more open you are to possibilities, the treater your chance for success.

You can also gain experience and find out what's a good fit by volunteering for various positions and keep asking others about their careers.

With every good wish.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. Firstly, you have to identify the careers you have interest.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Think about what you have interest, e.g. your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc. and identify the related careers
E.g. If you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music producer, music composer, etc.
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an engineer, accountant, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc.
2. Find out more on these careers and identify what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in the college
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Think about having an informational chat with someone who holds the job title you aspire to at the company. This type of interview is a powerful yet often overlooked networking tool. It's an excellent way to connect personally with someone! I came across this handy guide online that can help you understand the process better: https://www.coursera.org/articles/informational-interview. Give it a shot!
