How do I know if going to college immediately after high school is the right choice for me?

I attend Lexington High School which is very academically stressful and competitive. I was one of the many students that pushed myself throughout my four years there and now it seems as though it is expected of me to continue doing so in college right away but I am afraid of becoming burnt out and needing a gap year in order to make money and mature before committing to a college. #college #gap-year #life-transitions

You know, if you want an answer to this question make a list. What are the benefits of straight to college and what will you regret if you do this. Do the same for a gap year. What are the benefits and what will you regret. It might be you feel a little scared for the next big step in life and creating clarity will calm that down.

But the secret of life is pretty simple, you'll only know for sure when you actually do things.

Matthew’s Answer

Tess, the decision to go to college can be very tough. It is important to remember that doing something because everyone else is doing it is not always the best decision. Many students push themselves to go to college because all of their peers are and find themselves in a place that they do not want to be. When deciding whether to go or not ask yourself if you want to go and why you want to go. If you find that now is not the time and you want to explore other directions, make sure you do so with a purpose.

Carla’s Answer

If you need a break, take it, but have a plan in place on what you will do while you are a break. You will want to take advantage of this time to chart your course so that you are prepared for the next stages of your life. Volunteering could be one way to stay active and could also help you learn new skills. When you are ready to jump back into school (if that is your plan), take it one step at a time and remember to not take on a heavy workload if that will cause you to be stressed out.
