The Internet of Things is the technology connection between things that allows those things to send and receive data. A simple example would be when I take my car in to be serviced, the technician connects a computer to my car and gets all kinds of information about my car. That informs the technician about things to check in my car to make sure my car operates at its best.

Another example would be people who have health conditions might wear a sensor on their body that links to an app on their phone. The body sensor sends information to the app. The doctor, who is in another location, can access the information from the app to monitor the person's health. This allows the doctor to see if medications are working or if something different needs to be tried.

One more example would be sensors that have been placed in nature that provide readings on wind speed and direction or humidity or rainfall. This data is fed to a scientist at another location. This data can help predict the likelihood of a wildfire or if there is a wildfire, it can help predict the direction the fire will likely move. And that information can help firefighters to put the fire our more quickly.

By connecting "things" to technology, that allows us to receive data about different things and that data helps us to make decisions. And, because things are connected by technology, we don't need to be in the same location where the data is collected to understand what is happening. The Internet of Things gives us data that we might not otherwise be able to collect.

Great question. IOT is the connecting machines to extract data for analysis and decisions, or taking remote actions. We use IOT everyday without realizing it, think of Alexa or a Ring Door bell. Now apply that concept to virtually anything, sensors, switches etc. the possibilities are endless.
