Thomas’s Answer

There are several perspectives to consider. You have the option to pursue a career in the Finance sector, which usually includes banks or insurance firms, or you could opt for a Finance position within any other corporation. Alongside deciding on the role, it's also crucial to choose the industry you want to work in. Pay scales can vary across industries for the same job role, such as an accountant, risk manager, auditor, controller, and so on. For some of these positions, it's essential to acquire industry-specific knowledge in addition to Finance expertise.

To identify the perfect role for you, I would advise looking into rotational programs offered by numerous companies, or even contemplating an internship in a Finance department. Starting your career in Finance consulting, for instance, at a major audit firm, could also be a viable option as it typically provides exposure to various Finance departments through your projects.

Try looking at rotational programs! Alot of companies will offer rotational programs which allow you to try out various roles and experience different areas of a bank. I'm in one right now and it's an amazing opportunity to broaden your skills and figure out what departments you like best. Hope this helps!

In the finance sector, the answer to your question would typically be "It depends." This industry boasts a diverse array of professions, from high-profile roles like trading, mergers and acquisitions, and financial advisory that often make headlines, to more behind-the-scenes jobs like accounting and administration.

To make an informed decision, it's crucial to conduct thorough research on these careers. Utilize search engines like Google to gather information about their responsibilities. Engage with professionals already working in these fields - you can easily connect with them on platforms like LinkedIn. Consider securing an internship in the sector to gain first-hand experience.

Regardless of whether you're currently in high school or university, it's never too late to pursue relevant courses at your school. This will equip you with the necessary knowledge for a career in finance.

I believe that one of the most effective methods to enter the accounting or finance field is to start with a role in Accounts Payable or Accounts Receivable. These two departments offer you a broad exposure to various other areas in accounting. You get a chance to understand and explore different aspects such as Payroll, Financial Analysis, Tax Accounting, and Financial Planning, which might pique your interest.

Audrey’s Answer

I have worked in real estate sector (in Treasury), in oil/gas (in Corp Finance and Internal Audit) and banking/financial services (in Internal Audit). These were the career opportunities I progressed through with an Accounting Masters and CPA, but are also fields that a Finance major can easily thrive in. I would say, find an industry you are passionate about, and start there. Going to work every day, I found what gets me through is the people and being passionate about what the company does that I work for. You really can't go wrong with just starting off somewhere in the Finance field and pivoting if it wasn't for you.

The ideal finance career is going to be tailored to your unique strengths, weaknesses, and passions. To guide you on your journey, I would suggest considering a rotational program. This could be an excellent opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience in various finance sectors and identify what truly excites you, as well as what doesn't pique your interest. The beauty of this program is its flexibility - if you find it's not for you, it's only temporary. Regardless, you'll walk away with new insights about the field and a deeper understanding of yourself. This is a win-win situation, as you'll either discover a sector you love or learn valuable lessons that will shape your future decisions.

Robert’s Answer

Tricky one that... depends on what you want i.e. do you want the money, the career satisfaction or a work/life balance. e.g. Banking can be fairly impersonal and hard working (but financially rewarding), financing within a more information technology environment might be more mentally rewarding, or financial advice may give you work/life balance. So ask yourself what your goal in life is and then look at the different types of financial related roles out there. Then you can broadly figure out what you might want to do.

Rob’s Answer

Starting out in your career, it's a great idea to try out different roles within a company before choosing a specific area in finance. Keep in mind, your career path is more like a long-distance run, not a quick dash, so it's really important to find a job you genuinely love. The best way to find out what you love is by diving in and experiencing all the different parts yourself.
