1) Take things one step at a time. If you don't understand something then take a step back and make sure you understand everything that goes into it.

2) Be open to new and potentially unusual strategies. The way that my mom does math is completely different than how I do math and her strategies don't work for me so I had to learn my own.

3) Don't give up. I spent many hours at the library and with tutors until I gained a better understanding of each concept. Over time I did become more confident.

Studying math can be difficult, but there's always truth to it! I recommend working on some practice problems from textbooks or old exams. And if they have a step-by-step solution, even better because you can compare your work each step of the way to pin-point where you may have messed up. I'd also recommend setting time aside with your teacher, a tutor, or classmates who are doing well in the class; they will be able to review your work and clarify any information pertaining to the specific material or problem.

I've tutored different math subjects across different grades. Breaking down the steps and checking in with the students was a good test to understand their knowledge or what may have stumped them.
