What is a small thing that would make someone stand out to a potential employer?

I know that employers like to see people with lots of experience and plenty to fill their resume, but what is something that they would look for that most people wouldn't think of?

If you've researched the employer and are able to speak to why you want to work for them specifically, that can make you stand out. It's an important step, but not everyone actually takes the time to understand what an employer does and how their work would fit in. For example, I worked for an early literacy nonprofit. We'd ask candidates (including intern candidates) what three arguments they would make to tell someone why they should support the organization. People who had researched us were able to answer well, but others gave generic answers that didn't show they understood our mission. Depending on what job you're applying for, you may not have to speak about the employer's work in too much depth - but you should be prepared to answer a question like, why do you want to work at our company specifically. And if you aren't asked, it's still a good idea to bring this up to show your interest in the employer. Good luck!

Lots of employers like to see highlights of your experience where you have been a leader, motivating others, or even where you have implemented a new process. Also I would add any experience where you have been creative in your experience or helped others to be successful, such as mentoring youth or creating a program to help others.

It may seem challenging to put intangible characteristics onto paper, such as willingness to learn a new skill or adaptability to change. I'd recommend highlighting areas where you have contributed to your community (such as volunteer opportunities), any clubs you have been involved in, and your GPA. Also, for newer graduates a very important factor of your resume is grammar- don't underestimate the power of asking a friend to proofread and make edit suggestions. A lighter-in-content yet well spoken resume is always preferred over a resume with a lot of impressive achievements but peppered with grammatical and formatting errors.

For students who are entering the workforce you're not expected to have plenty of industry experience but rather the skills/knowledge, work ethic and aptitude for the job you're applying for. I would recommend highlighting volunteering, involvement in clubs, student projects, etc. where you can showcase these things. Keep your resume to one or two pages and the most recent and relevant information towards the top.
