Hi Natalie! I know the financial burden of college, so this is a great question. First things first, there are many different platforms to apply for scholarships. There are internal scholarships offered through most colleges, as well as external scholarships offered through different communities and professional establishments. My first step would always be to find your college's scholarship page and start applying there, as they usually offer higher monetary amounts than external scholarships. As for how much they offer, it depends on the scholarship, the donor, and the school. I have seen scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000. My advice would be to apply to as many as possible on your school site. I would also check local banks and other professional establishments, as they often offer $500-$1000 scholarships. That being said, if you are an entering freshman there are certain scholarships through schools that offer to take a part of your tuition off through the years, as long as you keep a good academic standing. It is so exciting thinking about the college days ahead. With that also comes thoughts of how to finance your college education and we've all been there. I see that you are very interested in obtaining scholarships to cover some of the cost, so I have some advice and also have left some links for you below to see what scholarships are out there. And there are more than those, too. It's just a matter of researching and most scholarship information would tell you what dollar amount they are offering. Each scholarship has a different dollar amount as well as how many students they award that scholarship to, so it's hard to say unless you read each scholarship individually to get a definite picture.
At the onset of applying for them, my advice is to apply for many, many of them, covering a lot of ground. The combination of scholarships you may receive may help you out tremendously. I received a scholarship during my Sophomore year, a private one from the college I went to, and it was awarded to only three students. It was small and covered the cost of my textbooks for two semesters. That helped out a lot.
Something to remember is that when you apply for the scholarships, other students will be applying for them too, so you do not receive it just because you've applied, rather you are chosen for a scholarship. That's why my best advice is to apply for all different types, from federal, state and local resources, corporations and any more that you can find. The more you apply for, the more your chances will increase to obtain some scholarships. Organize days of the week and time slots to focus and work on researching the various scholarships and than when it comes time to apply, do the same thing. Pick some days and hours of the week to work on scholarships. Because you'll apply for many, you'll need to comfortably schedule a good time and days to do it. Keep a hard copy or electronic notebook of the ones you find so you'll know where to go to apply for them.

There are general scholarships that have few qualifications in order to be open to a wider range of individuals. Some scholarships have specific qualifications that need to be met in order to be considered eligible, an example would be a scholarship that is only available to students in the Nursing program. There are many scholarships that are available and it is important to read through the eligibility qualifications before applying.
