Is the Earth flat?

Earth is our home planet. Scientists believe Earth and its moon formed around the same time as the rest of the solar system. They think that was about 4.5 billion years ago. Earth is the fifth-largest planet in the solar system. Its diameter is about 8,000 miles. And Earth is the third-closest planet to the sun. Its average distance from the sun is about 93 million miles. Only Mercury and Venus are closer.

Jacob’s Answer

The belief that the Earth was flat in ancient times mainly stemmed from the fact that, from our perspective on the ground, it appears flat. Historically, most people didn't venture far from their birthplace, so their view of the horizon remained constant. Additionally, their primary concern was survival, not the planet's shape.

The misunderstanding that the Earth must be flat because it seems flat to us is simply due to its vast size. The height of an adult is significantly smaller than one millionth of the Earth's radius. To witness the Earth's curvature in one glance, you'd need to be positioned high above the surface, a considerable fraction of its radius, and one millionth is far from being considered "significant."
