Fred’s Answer

Well...who says you should?

If you find it interesting, it's a great thing to learn. If it seems boring, then no, don't bother.

If you are getting into information technology, it may be good to learn a little about it. The more you know, the better you will be at the job you do end up doing. I don't like front-end work, but knowing a bit about it helps me do back-end work, and I'm sure the opposite is true.

Elliot’s Answer

Because its interesting work and you are always learning. Jobs are out there. But nobody is twisting your arm... If you enjoy it, do it. If not, there is also high demand for welders and electricians. Your better question would be - what work do I think I will enjoy? Have you TRIED learning web development? Give it a chance!

Paula’s Answer

Hi Paul! If you have certain level of curiosity about web development that is great! I would suggest you first to ask also yourself why are you having that spark of curiosity so that you find yourself the answer and embrace that together with our answers due web development has a loooot of areas where you can specialize in, from Developing for the back end (Databases, data processing, etc) or front end (what interacts with the user, working with json files, design etc...) you can actually add more value to the final users not only by making available the different modules or functions that are meant to be presented, but also by interacting with the User Experience professionals you can make a business to grow very very fast as the users will be happily interacting with the system whether is an online shop, a social media website, a tool to enable students and teachers to interact, etc...
The web's world itself add tons of value nowadays to the society by creating tools that help us to do faster and better things or to simply entertain ourselves, and to me is something that enables you also to have a backup plan in case you would like to study something else and work at it, you could work on your free time or difficult times if someday you no longer have a formal job, because of external reasons that you cannot control, you could start your own marketing agency offering to develop and maintain other business websites.

Holger’s Answer

Before I give you advice, let's define what "web development" is in my understanding. From my point of view, a web developer should be able to create a website using frontend technologies like HTML5 and CSS while being able to also code e.g. using JavaScript/TypeScript. Also, a more advanced web developer can master application frameworks like React or Vue.

After we have defined that, e can target why you should become a web developer? In my opinion the technologies used to do web development become more and more ubiquitous. This means, if you are able to e.g. code with javascript, you are also able to create an app for mobile devices or to do backend development and many more.

So, if its your goal to pursue a career in the software industry, web development is a great starter and an awesome skill to have!

Holger recommends the following next steps:

Make yourself familiar with HTML and CSS
Create a basic website about yourself with ChatGPT
Make the website better piece by piece
Watch coding intro videos on YouTube
