My biggest challenge when starting a new role at a company is to understand the company culture, the team work environment, and the managerial style/approach that my new supervisor utilizes. During the interview process, I try to ask culture-related questions as well as managerial style/approach questions. I have taken several work personality and culture assessments tests and combined them with my previous work experience to come up with common qualities or traits that work best for me. Having a (seemingly) great job but having a bad manager or company culture can quickly lower morale. I personally look for companies/teams that prefer to collaborate and share information, have a supportive approach to achieving project and task goals, clear lines of communication, more formal or established processes, and other traits. Working in a non-collaborative or hectic company environment can make your job that much harder than it needs to be. You want to be set up to succeed in your role, not just get thrown into the "fire" and hope you are able to be productive.

My biggest challenge was whether or not I should have disclosed that I am Legally Blind. I wasn't sure how it be received, viewed, and interrupted by my employer. I never wanted to burden anyone. Moreso, I wanted to be seen as someone with skills that can do the job, just a little bit differently than most; I assure you. But I was able to do the job. Now, it's not a worry of mine because I have more confidence than I ever had. So, it makes me more determined to gain the chance to prove that I'm a valued team player.
