Your writing goals will determine what you can gain from publishing your own novel or short story. We all have motives behind our writing, the way we structure our narratives, and how we craft vivid details to paint a picture that resonates with readers. Do you aim to highlight societal issues, captivate readers with mind-bending twists, or inspire others with a unique viewpoint?
There are countless reasons to write a novel or short story, and identifying your purpose is key. This will guide you to the right publication that caters to your target audience. If you're seeking future financial gain, in becoming a career writer one day, you have many years to develop your material in that case.
It may take a long time to develop an entire novel, so the short story may be a better place to start when working exclusively in creative fiction. Remember, there are numerous self-publishing options available. A quick Google search will lead you to various platforms where you can publish your work.

So- it is a big question and an amazing undertaking.
There are many ways to publish, from self-publishing- you pay the fees and recoup with sales, to acquiring an agent to represents you and your bid for the bet buyer/publisher and, as you might imagine, many variations in between.
The idea of putting something out there - publishing, is an ancient and honored profession.
And, with social media- it is so much simpler to get yourself out there.
So, I will focus on the why in this answer:
Do you want people to read your work without cost, fees, book binding, etc? Set up a website and put your work out there. You could ask for donations, ask people to share your work with your name on it, there are so many options.
Remember, when you create something and put your name on it, it is yours- no need to formally copyright unless you choose to- it is not expensive.
So- think about your why and how - and do what is best for you at this stage of your career, and for the type of work you are creating.

It depends on what you want to gain from publishing your work at this stage, but there are a few good paths to consider. There are more self-publishing options than ever now — eBooks, blogs, online magazines, and other digital platforms — and these can be a great way to get your writing out into the world. That matters, of course, and it can also help you start getting feedback from a broader audience.
That said, given your age and experience level, I’d lean toward more curated and edited outlets that do more than just publish your work. The best opportunities are often the ones that help you grow as a writer, not just as a byline. That might mean something at your school or in your community, such as a school newspaper, literary magazine, creative writing club, or class. It could also mean a local newspaper or magazine that’s open to mentoring an apprentice or junior writer.
Editors — and especially people who can give honest, constructive feedback — are incredibly important at every stage, but especially when you’re still developing your craft. Look for opportunities that let you publish while also helping you build relationships with peers and editors. In the short term, that will improve your writing; in the long term, it will help you become a better learner and a stronger collaborator, which is a big and often underrated part of being a professional writer.
