How do you pick a college when you don't know what to major in?

I have so many friends who have already figured out what they're going to do with their life and their college reflects that. They want to go to schools with the best nursing department or with a strong accounting department etc. I know I want to go to college but I feel it's hard when I'm not sure what I want to do, yet. How can I pick a college without knowing what I'm going to major in? #college-major #college #choose-a-college #choosing-a-major

Hi Kierstyn! Your question is very valid and applies to many college bound students. I had the same problem when it came time to apply for college. But do not worry, you have many options. Outside of the colleges that are very focused on a certain career track, say a technical, trade, or performing arts school, many colleges have a variety of programs. A few steps that may provide some benefit (below in suggested next steps)

Amit recommends the following next steps:

Read up on various majors. Maybe try someone quick online tutorials/classes discussing different fields to become more familiar with majors that are available.
Further research types of programs that you find interesting and could potentially see yourself majoring in, do not worry, this will not have to be your major.
Pick general locations that you are interested in attending college, and provide opportunities that you find engaging.
Start narrowing down colleges that provide programs and locations that have a good fit.

Collegeboard.org is a great resource for this! I poured through the pages of universities all over the U.S. when I was a senior in high school. Collegeboard was my go-to site! They put all of the information in one place and it is very easy to use. They even have various filters you can apply to see only colleges that have programs you are interested. To determine academic rigor, look at the admissions requirements, G.P.A. of past admitted applicants, SAT/ACT scores, class rank etc. This will give you an idea of what scores and grades you need to be accepted. However, don't be discouraged your application will be reviewed based on the full picture! College-board will help you get an idea of what is most important to the specific school you are applying to.

This professional recommends the following next steps:

 • Chat with your Guidance Counselor
 • Create a Collegeboard.org account
 • Start using CollegeBoard as a resource to look up schools.

Hi Kierstyn, it is great that you know you want to attend college however if you don't know yet what you would like to major in. Since that is your case may I suggest either enrolling in a Liberal Arts school or Community College. Liberal Arts schools typically start you off with basic core classes such as English and Math and you really don't get to your major classes until your Junior year. It may help you figure out what you really want to get into. The same for Community Colleges, typically for those who are unsure of what career path they want to take. It can also be of help financially as Community College tuition is less than most traditional colleges. Hope this helps and good luck.
