How would I start shadowing a doctor as a high school student?

I am a 16 year old in High School as a sophomore in Wayne, NJ. I am interested in getting into the medical lane. I currently volunteer for a Rehab Center near me, however, I am looking forward to shadowing or possibly volunteering in a greater health care setting. Where should I start if I want to shadow someone, and what are some great opportunities that could really enhance my experience with the medical side of careers as a high school student?

Great question. If there are local hospitals, they might have a volunteering program that you can start with. From there you can make connections with doctors and ask if they would be willing to have you shadow them.

It's fantastic to hear about your enthusiasm for the medical field and your proactive approach in volunteering at a rehab center! To get started with shadowing healthcare experts, why not have a chat with the staff at your rehab center? They may be acquainted with doctors or nurses who would be delighted to let a high school student shadow them.

Additionally, consider getting in touch with local hospitals or clinics in Wayne. Quite a few of them have shadowing programs designed specifically for high school students. A simple phone call or email to their volunteer departments could reveal a wealth of opportunities.

Joining groups like HOSA (Future Health Professionals) could also be beneficial. They frequently have local branches and can offer resources or even arrange shadowing experiences. Don't forget to have a chat with your school's guidance counselor as well. They're there to help you link up with healthcare professionals or discover programs that match your interests.

Lastly, don't underestimate the power of online platforms like LinkedIn. They can be a great tool for networking with healthcare professionals. You might just stumble upon someone who's open to letting you shadow them or answer any queries you have about their career.

By following these steps, you'll not only gain invaluable experience but also establish connections that could prove extremely beneficial in your journey towards a healthcare career. Best of luck!
