What are some competitive legal programs/extracurriculars I can participate in as a high school student in Massachusetts?

I currently have a volunteer position as an Activism Intern and do Mock Trial at my school, but I want to do more and have the experience to get a paid internship at a law firm.

Hi Erika, just like you I'm also interested in the law/legal field. I think one thing that would be a great extracurricular would be mock trial. It's a high school club, so I would recommend checking if your high school offers it(it should). This club is basically just a literal mock trial, the students will be given a case, they will have to create all the questions such as directs and crosses as well as answers, so basically anything a real attorney/witness would do in real court, including objections, responding to objections, openings, closings, evidence, etc. This club is also a competition, so all the preparation you do, you would actually go and compete at real court with other mock trial teams. One thing that I love about this club, is that when you compete there is a real judge, real jury, and at a real court house. And I think this is dependent on school, but you may have opportunities to work with real attorneys and get their advice on your directs, crosses, and character development for witnesses. And the students also act as either the attorney or the witness, but regardless of what role you get, being in this club already exposes you to part of the legal world.
Good Luck and have fun! :)

Hi Erika - it is great that you are already actively pursuing your goals! I found one interesting opportunity with the courts in Massachusetts - see 1st link below.
The 2nd link is the blog it came so you could see more of what is out there.
The 3rd link is from a search of the Massachusetts.gov site. You may be interested in interning in the State Attorney General's office or maybe the advocacy offices of other departments. A stint in the Public Health office may give you subject knowledge you could use in your advocacy.
Good luck!

Martha recommends the following next steps:

Judicial Youth Corps - https://www.mass.gov/info-details/judicial-youth-corps-program
Law internships for high schoolers blog - https://blog.collegevine.com/law-internships-for-high-school-students
