About

I typically work on three types of projects:
- I help clients identify and remove/manage contamination on their commercial, midstream, or municipal sites
- I prepare desktop hydrogeological assessments to identify and mitigate groundwater issues that may arise during construction.
- And I help locate, quantify, and license water supply for the client's use (municipal or commercial applications).

Lincoln’s Career Stories

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

I currently manage projects, which includes managing the relationship with the client, technical execution of the work, and making sure it all stays on budget.

How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?

I knew I wanted to start out working doing something outdoors, so I gravitated toward Geology. I loved that it is a relatively new science, and involved problem solving and thought vs. memorizing formulas (though there was some of that too!). During university, I heard about the company I currently work for (Stantec) but they weren't hiring when I graduated, so I worked somewhere else, gaining more experience in a related field. After that job ran its course, I searched out my company again, but they didn't have positions open in the environmental field. I really wanted to get my foot in the door with this company so took a geotechnical position that was open, where I gained valuable experience and made connections that I still have today and help me network and provide additional services to my clients. I've "paid my dues" by working lots in the field, but it has helped me be a better project manager, as I know what can happen when I send someone out to collect data for me. Now, over 14 years later, I'm still happy in the career path I chose and the folks/company I work with!

When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?

I was fortunate enough to participate in two paid internships through a University. Through those two summers, I learned what fields of Geology I enjoyed and those I'd rather not go too deep in! I was exposed to surveying techniques I've used in my current job, but even more importantly it gave me more perspective of the type of work out there and what I liked/didn't like about it. I felt less lost and hazy about what I wanted to do when I graduated because of those experiences.

What is it like when your job gets tough?

I think this will be different for everyone, but the job will always have tough times. Even after being in the work force for 15+ years, I still have stressful times when things aren't all roses. Sacrifices will need to be made - whether that's late nights at the office/in the field, or the odd cancelled vacation. But especially when you're starting out, it's important to make these sacrifices, pay your dues, show the company you can put in the effort (without complaining!). Once that trust is gained, you often will get more responsibility and flexibility. Learn from those tough times and use them to make the next one easier. Gain that perspective and feel rewarded when you come out the other side with more knowledge and confidence than you went into it.
