Teresa M.’s Career Stories

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

I hope people identify the career they want, plan and set goals to achieve their desired career. I also help people with getting promotions in their current organization or transition to a new organization or transition to a completely different career.

What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?

I wish someone would have taken the time to just talk to me and understand what I wanted to do and provide guidance on how to make it happen.

How did you start building your network?

I started building my network by joining LinkedIn and reaching out to fellow career providers. I joined Associations and went to seminars and workshops.

How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?

My military career picked me and saved me from domestic violence. For the first nine years I worked in the mental health field providing counseling to soldiers. I was getting ready to leave the military because I was burnt out in my job. My career counselor suggested I work with him for a year as a counselor taking to Soldiers about their careers. I loved it. I started planning for my military retirement at my 10 year mark because I knew I would need to go back to college. I was looking at several programs to become a teacher in Maryland because that’s where I wanted to go back to after I retired. There was a link for a college and as I was looking through that colleges programs I found it. They had a masters in career counseling program. I started that gal when I returned from deployment. Before finding that program I was going to settle for being a teacher because I would still be able to provide guidance for students for their education and career goals. Finding that program made me realize I can do what I love I just had to do the research and work to make my dream come true.
