Interior design in my opinion is not a huge revenue generating industry. That being said, there are designers that really make a lot of money. Areas where you have the opportunity to generate real income is in hotels. You need a staff in order to execute the design. Also, government work has higher earning potential. A licensed interior designer makes more money typically.
Networking, social media (works mostly for residential interior design), and marketing are needed to grow a business. Good client relations for repeat business, help with lowering marketing costs. Cost of business in the most recent years has been challenging due to the cost of software, insurance, and office space increasing in cost. Fees typically do not increase at the same rate. Clients are always asking for lower fees.
Skills and being able to pivot are essential in being successful. Tracking hours (how much time it takes to do something) is important in knowing what fee to charge.
Knowing what you are good at and outsourcing for things that you are not help with productivity. Remember it's a business, you need a lawyer, accountant, and understand what is required to run a business, filing taxes monthly, etc.
