How do I go about auditioning and/or finding a talent agency (if possible)?

I am a freshman in high school and for a long time I have been interested in acting. I really enjoy the feeling of being someone I'm not, and I think it would be fun to do this professionally as a film, voice, of TV actress. The only problem I have is how to get started. Can you give me some tips on how to get involved in auditions and, if possible, and agency? Thanks. #acting #film #television #film-acting #actors #voice-acting

Hi Abigail,

Are you involved in local community or school theater? That's a great way to start auditioning and get good experience acting. There may also be some local casting agencies in the Pittsburgh area that cast TV and movies in your area - but you'll probably need an adult guardian to help you with that until you're 18. Maybe you could talk to your parents, or another adult you're close to, about your interest in researching/reaching out to local casting agencies?

If you spend the next few years doing theater in your area, and pursuing local acting opportunities near you, when you're 18 you can decide if you're ready to move to a city like New York or LA (where there are the most acting opportunities), to pursue it professionally.

When you see teenage actors in TV and movies, they've often moved to one of those two cities with their families because the whole family is committed to starting their acting career early. But many young people like you pursue theater and opportunities in their hometowns, decide whether or not they want to study performing arts in college, and then make the move to professional actor when they're a little older.

Thank you comment icon Thanks for your help! I will try to find a community theater that I can get involved with. Abigail

Hi Abigail,

As Kendall had mentioned above, you should definitely consider joining your school's Theater Club or local Theater community and let them know that you are interested in pursuing a career in on-camera acting. For your case, I think it will be very valuable for you to have more on-screen acting time, and that you should consider contacting and or connecting with the Film club at your school, and at universities to let them know that you are open and up for acting in their films!

Many producers that I have worked on also use external resources and website like Backstage, Casting Frontier and more to find actors for their projects - you may want to consider looking into these types of sites to get yourself out there!

Kathy recommends the following next steps:

Do more research on casting websites such as Backstage, and more, to find the best site for you get your career started.
Consider connecting with actors or actresses in college, local theaters and more, to hear more about their process, career path, and advice! This is a great opportunity for you to connect with more actors in the field that will lead to your first acting gigs.
Volunteer to act in a friend's, classmate's film for class or even for a YouTube video!
Consider recording self-tapes and publishing/uploading them to different social media sites to get more people to see your skills and your talents.
