What advice do you have for an aspiring teacher/writer ?

I'm planning on majoring in English in college. Mainly I want to teach English but I also want to write one day.

Hi Mila!

That’s such a great combo teaching and writing go hand in hand more than people think. Majoring in English is a perfect start, especially if you love language and storytelling. Teaching will give you a deeper connection to literature and can actually inspire your own writing. Plus, you'll constantly be engaging with new ideas and perspectives, which helps you grow as a writer too.

My best advice? Start writing now, even if it’s just a little bit each week. Get used to finding your voice and experimenting with different styles. And while you’re in school, take classes that sharpen both your teaching and creative skills. Down the line, you could teach during the day and write on the side or even publish stories that reflect your experiences in the classroom.

You've got plenty of time to blend both passions into something really meaningful. Keep reading, keep writing, and let your love for words guide you.

You've got this!

Start writing now, even if it's just a blurb. Don't dive into writing headlong without having practiced a bit. Write an article, a short story, something simple to begin with. But congrats on having a path, just make sure you find the right connections, follow your passion, and make the right inroads toward what you want.

Hello, Mila !

You have a most awesome career goal and I can give you some advice !

When you plan for college, remember that you should not get your Bachelors Degree in English as that will not prepare you to be a teacher. You will need to Major in Education and you can take a few English classes as electives or as a Minor or both. In Florida, you will need the Bachelors Degree as well as an initial teaching preparation training to teach elementary school up to 12th grade. Although the requirements vary in Florida to teach at a college, depending on the college you apply to teach at, you can plan to get a Masters Degree in Writing or English, the subject you wish to teach. That is what is required by your state. So a Bachelors Degree degree in English would not help you.

You can start writing now, also while in college and also during the time you are a teacher. You don't have to wait to be a writer. Take as many writing classes as you can right now at your current school. Research online about creative writing and various types of writing. Writing is something you can always do in your free time or as a scheduled activity. Think about joining your school newspaper or website and writing articles. Interview staff for special highlight pieces for the school website or paper.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
