What keeps you going back to the job? Do you see more kids or adults? Do you consider your job fun?

I want to get a nursing job but I wanna know the pros and cons before I make my final decision and actually choose this job. I've wanted to do this job for a while but I've been wondering if many people are mean, which makes me a little nervous.
(idrc that much if their mean just curious). Do you get a lot of nice patients? Do you get a lot of patients who come with parents who answer for them?

Josslyn,
That is a great question. I did take care of children for a while and really enjoyed the children and love babies. I worked in a pediatric clinic and a children's hospital. There is a downside. It is related to the parents. This is not all parents. The refusal to vaccinate is extremely misguided. I am vaccinated, my children are, and I have vaccinated 1000's of children and they were fine. The more and more I saw this, the more I was getting tired of dealing with it. Parents will feed their kids McDonald's everyday, but won't vaccinate. I had to have a break from that. Taking care of adults is completely different. I try to treat my patients like I would my family members. I have met some great people. As a nurse, I always try to remember that you are dealing with people at some of the worst times of their lives. There is always a down side with this. The worst for me is when I have to deal with someone who has a major sense of entitlement. They feel that they know more then the doctor or refuses to do what is required before surgery or a medical test and get extremely angry when they get canceled. Most people I take care of are very nice. I did live is a southern state that shall remain nameless, I had the most obnoxious patients. It got to be unbearable. It shocked me. I moved to the northeast and I take care of people from all walks of life, different races and cultures. 90% are great people and appreciate what we do. Even when it is painful and unpleasant. My best advice is have empathy and keep your sense of humor. Good Luck,
Lisa

Hi Josslyn,

While you wait for others to reply, I wanted to refer you to a similar question asked by another student on the platform (link: https://www.careervillage.org/questions/727273/what-are-things-you-like-about-being-a-nurse). It looks like most nurses continue to do this type of work because of how rewarding and fulfilling it is to help people. I'd highly suggest reading through some of the answers.

In addition, it seems like the types of patients you see will be determined by your speciality (if you choose to have one). For example, if you enjoy working with kids, you can specialize in pediatrics but you also have the option to pick a speciality that involves working with adult populations (or a mix like labor and delivery).
