Differences between teaching a High School class and a middle school class, without the obvious difference of maturity?

I've already cut elementary teaching out of the picture because I enjoy the more mature conversations and the support you may bring to middle or high school kids but I don't exactly know where to go.

I taught middle school art and I loved it. But either you love it and are a good fit or they will chew you up and spit you out. You must have a great sense of humor first of all. Also you must set your expectations immediately and rules, etc...These students need to know exactly what they will be doing and it helps to explain in detail. Then enjoy the kids. There is a tremendous difference between 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Teaching art, I taught all grades, but otherwise you would just have one grade level. If you really care about your students and love what you are teaching, then all should be well.

Dear Madeline - Your question is a really good one. I am not sure that there is an easy answer, but I can provide a few thoughts. One thing to consider is that quite often, middle school students are still learning how to be students. As a middle school teacher, you will find yourself working with students on getting to class on time, having the appropriate materials, learning how work in a collaborative group setting, and adhering to assignment deadlines. While these issues will arise in high school as well, there is probably a bit more confusion about how this all comes together at the middle school level.
You may want to consider your content area and how you perceive yourself as a future educator. Content oriented teachers many times appear to be more comfortable at the high school level. Student oriented teachers are often motivated by the opportunity to help the younger students find their way in the world.
Depending on where you are in your educational preparation, I would recommend scheduling classroom observations at both levels. Check out which environment matches your career aspirations. Welcome to a great profession.
