What minor would best supplement a major in Economics?

I'm an 18-year-old high school senior about to graduate in less than 2 months. I plan to attend a four-year university as an Economics major. But to further my education pertaining to finance, what's the best kind of minor to study along with it (Accounting, Statistics, etc.). #Spring25

I personally did an Accounting Concentration in college. I feel like it opened many doors for me, but it is all a preference to what area of economics you are interested in.

I believe computer science (or other related topics like data science) would be a good choice, as it equips you with some exclusive skills to tackle real world problems in Econ.

Hi Tyrone! I would saying accounting/finance. I would recommend this because regardless of the field/industry you go into, accounting will always be there. So, in a sense, that doesn't limit your options to one set industry and you can be more open to whichever field you are more interested in. Good luck for everything!

Karin’s Answer

Hi Tyrone,

Your choice of a minor depends on your interests and where you want to go with this education. You find some suggestions here:

If you are headed into finance, why not add a minor in finance, or major in finance with a minor in economics? Also, data science is always useful.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Khushboo’s Answer

Hi Tyrone, I minored in Accounting while majoring in Business Economics in college. In my opinion, accounting introduces you to the basic technical knowledge required when working in most careers in Finance and Economics. Additionally, I've also seen others minor in data analysis or another stats related field which is equally helpful. A rare piece of advice is also to maybe minor in a field you're really interested in as a hobby (maybe a creative field). College is all about exploring and it's great to sometimes look beyond the career lens and just learn more about something you just really like. Good luck!!

Hi Tyrone, I would suggest finance or accounting to broaden your career opportunities- corporate finance, investment banking, auditing, financial analysis. I agree with the other answers that it should be based on what interests you and what career path you see for yourself!

Michelle’s Answer

I think any of those would be a good complementary fit, though my first thought was finance. You should pick an area that interests you most and based on the majors/minors available at your school. AI will continue to be a skill needed to grow expertise in, so if you have an opportunity for that I encourage that as well.
