Discovering what you love to do can make work enjoyable and rewarding. Start by completing the exercises in "What Color Is Your Parachute?" to identify your interests. Before jumping into a job like school counseling, which might involve a lot of effort for low pay, ensure you fully understand the role and its demands. Explore the US OSHA database to find careers that appeal to you. Study Maslow's foundational psychology research to gain insight into human needs and motivation. Enroll in Yale's free "Happiness Course" on Coursera to learn more about personal fulfillment. Define what fulfillment means for you instead of relying on others to decide.

This is a bit lengthy, but it's important and exciting! Choosing a degree in school counseling is a fantastic decision. It's a career filled with meaning, and it's worth thinking about what that means for you. Meaningful work often includes several key elements:

Purpose: Does the job match your values? School counseling has a direct impact on young people's lives, helping them with school, social issues, and emotions. If you value helping others grow and succeed, this career will feel very purposeful.

Impact: Do you see the results of your work? In school counseling, you'll see the positive changes you bring to students' lives. Watching a student overcome a challenge or reach a goal can be incredibly rewarding.

Growth: Does the job challenge you both intellectually and personally? School counseling is always changing, requiring you to learn and adapt. You'll work with diverse groups and face new challenges often.

Passion: Are you excited about what you do? If you love education, helping young people, and mental health, this career will keep your enthusiasm alive.

To dive deeper into what "meaningful" means for you in school counseling, think about these questions:

What parts of school counseling excite you the most? (like college guidance, personal therapy, or crisis help)
What impact do you want to have on students' lives?
What are your strengths and weaknesses that you can use in this field?
What support will you need to stay healthy and avoid burnout? (This is vital in a helping career).

Your career will be meaningful if it matches your values and gives you fulfillment. By reflecting on these questions, you can define what meaningful work means to you and ensure your career in school counseling truly connects with your heart.

Karan’s Answer

Hey Maria,

This is a subjective question I guess and I've seen it pop-up here earlier too. I don't have a very different answer now as I did then.

This question is what everyone has asked themselves before starting to work anywhere. However, you will see that as one starts working, this question becomes futile in the grand scheme of things.

There is no single answer. Everybody is constantly reflecting on this.
Most of the people are happy at the fact that they are working and making money. Money that allows you to do so many things which you wish to, always wanted to, that speak to your soul. Things from where you might derive your "Fulfilment".
Few people let this question govern their decisions.

I hope you achieve the kind of work you're aspiring and it turns out to be fulfilling.
