What are some tips for choosing your school after student teaching?

I am currently in my junior year for a Bachelor in Early Childhood Education. I am super excited for student teaching next year, and I am looking forward to working at a new school. However, I’m thinking forward to my first year of teaching, and I am wondering how I will know if a school is right for me. What are things to watch out for? What are some red flags? What are some green flags?
I would love to learn some tips for choosing the “right” school to work at as a first-year teacher!

First, A's answer is a good one.

In addition, I would consider waling in to some of the schools in your area and talking to the administration and asking to talk to some of the teachers.

If that is possible, have questions that are pertinent to you ready, and keep a journal and record your conversations in it.

And if the school administration and specific teachers agree, ask if you can sit in and observe some classes. Be prepared to ask questions after you have observed. And the more observations in more schools, obviously the better. Again, notes in the journal.

This will take a good deal of time and energy, but if this is the career you wish to have, getting off to a positive start is essential.

A’s Answer

Seek out positive signs like strong mentorship opportunities, a team-oriented staff culture, clear communication from the administration, and support for new teachers. Be aware of warning signs like not enough planning time, high teacher turnover, and unsupportive staff. Trust your instincts—if you feel supported, respected, and excited, it's a great sign!
