Hi there! I completed my Business Marketing degree back in 2018 and have been working in the brand space ever since. I absolutely love it. Right now, I’m an Employer Brand Manager, which means my focus is on recruitment marketing. It’s a really fun and rewarding area of digital marketing because I get to touch so many parts of the craft—from writing copy and creating one-pagers, to crafting social media posts and email newsletters. Every day is different, and I’m always learning.

If you're interested in pursuing a career in digital marketing, my advice would be to stay curious and get hands-on as much as possible. Whether it’s through internships, freelancing, or personal projects, real-world experience goes a long way. Also, make sure you're exploring different areas like content, paid media, SEO, and analytics so you can find your niche and passion. And finally, keep up with industry trends and tools. It’s a fast-moving space, but that’s part of what makes it so exciting!

Wishing you all the best on your journey!

When I graduated from college with a Business degree, majoring in Marketing, I never pictured myself working at a bank. But here I am, 24 years later, still thriving with the same company I joined right after graduation, working in direct mail marketing and loving every moment! Your career is a journey full of exciting paths. It's important to find a company that fits you well, where you can truly thrive. It might be a top-ranked marketing firm from the start, but don't worry if it's not. Like my experience, you might begin in a role not directly tied to marketing, but you'll gain valuable skills and build strong relationships that lead to the roles you desire. Be open to learning and growing in different positions, and don’t hesitate to make lateral moves if needed to reach your goals. Volunteer for special projects and opportunities that let you cross-train in various areas. Network and seek mentors in different marketing channels to stay on people's minds when new jobs come up. Once you find a position you’re passionate about, go for it with all the knowledge and experience you've gathered. Marketing skills are versatile, so trust in your abilities and the positive impact you can make in any role. Digital Marketing is especially exciting right now, and I wish you all the best on your journey!

Hi there, Samantha,

While I didn’t get into marketing straight out of college (bad grades—study hard!!), I eventually joined a digital advertising agency where I got an amazing look into the digital marketing and advertising space, specifically in paid social media marketing. Since graduating in 2014, I’ve worked at two other advertising agencies and now work on the brand side within an in-house marketing department.

One of the best lessons I’ve learned is to stay open to learning new things and stepping out of your comfort zone, doing so will open doors for you. In my case, it meant jumping in to help teammates or working on different clients when I had time. That gave me exposure to a wide range of industries, which really helped when it came time to change jobs or when exciting new clients came on board. It meant I already had the experience and insights needed to make an impact or be who they needed in the position.

Networking will also take you far and it doesn’t have to mean attending formal events. Sometimes it’s just about getting to know the people around you. Building relationships with the accounting and finance teams, or learning who does what across different marketing disciplines, can really shape your career. After 8.5 years in marketing, I can confidently say it’s a small industry, and those connections can make a big difference.

Digital marketing is such an exciting space because it's always evolving, and I hope your career takes you on an incredible journey through it. Best of luck!

I know things have dramatically changed in advertising & marketing since I first started (gulp) over 30 years ago.....but my path was one of trying out everything until I landed in a space I could truly flourish in, and combine everything I had learned, through today. I sought out positions at ad agencies, media companies, and direct brands. It afforded me the opportunity to learn all facets, lean into areas that inspired me, but most importantly -- allowed me to build a vast network of great people in the industry. Networking, to me, is the single best thing you can do! Join industry groups (virtual or in-person), take part in any online webinars for the various segments of marketing, local advertising groups - even going through LinkedIn and reach out to others who may have jobs that would interest you. Our industry is very supportive of each other, and understand how important business colleague relationships are.....folks will be very responsive if you reach out to ask some basic advice, career guidance, a "day in the life of your job", and so much more. Exciting times are ahead for you!
