Paul’s Answer

I asked this once, to a coach at the college where I advised student athletes.

He told me there were a number of things, that he did to develop his coaching skills, most involved education and activities outside of his actual coaching duties at the college.

He told me that he volunteered at regional summer camps, at other colleges and at regional YMCA's. When they coach at these campus they are normally allowed to select [players, from the attending campers, and form a team. This helped develop coaching and leadership skills.

Another thing he did, was get more education. I believe that all coaches should be certified, and the only way to get this is to get a higher level certificate or degree from a college or university.

When I wanted to improve my coaching skills (track and field), I actually had to attend an institution like the University of Oregon, which had the program that I needed to become certified.

So, these are two possible options.

Keep up the great work! Watch how your players respond to you and their progress to see your impact as a coach. Experiment with new ideas, keep learning, and consider taking courses or attending coaching conventions to continue growing and improving.
