What is the work life balance like for a medical pathologist? Also, what classes would you reccomend to take as an undergraduate in order to better my chances of getting into a pathology school? #spring25

hello, Aspyn I hope you are doing great. Pathologist you need to search labs go for the pharmaceuticals labs & ask them for shadowing or for volunteer to get to know the field otherwise you also offer assistant services to professors so you can get a chance to learn from them. for work life balance you have to do at least 1 shadow or volunteer activity once a week & to read latest articles from your field especially CDC. Thanks

Hi Aspyn, First of all, to become a pathologist in the US you have to go to medical school first and then do a pathologist residency. So you are looking at a premed course of study in college and doing all the things to get into medical school. Pathology residency is 4 to 5 years. It's a long road but once you get there you will find the work life balance is amazing. Even hospital based pathologists don't have to take a lot of call and rarely get called in to the hospital. You can work from 8 to 5 and maybe even less. I have found there are options for part time work as well. The field is rapidly becoming digital, so by the time you got into practice you might find you could work many days from home on your computer, signing out cases. AI is also becoming integrated with the field and it looks like it will take care of some of the more boring parts of the job, like counting mitotic figures (cells that are dividing).
