What advice would you recommend for an aspiring anthropologist?

Despite attending college and planning to transfer, the process is still overwhelming. I want to major in anthropology, but I have no way to go about gaining experience.

Hi Kawanna,

I know how frustrating it can be to figure out where to start your career. I'm here to help and hopefully give you some ideas!

The American Anthropological Association says there are four main areas in anthropology: human biology, archaeology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics. Most anthropologists focus on one or two of these, but they know a bit about all of them. You can find more about careers in anthropology on their website.

Here are some job ideas directly related to anthropology:
- **Archaeology**: Study past cultures by looking at artifacts and sites.
- **Cultural Resource Management**: Protect cultural heritage sites and artifacts.
- **Museum Curator**: Manage museum collections and create exhibits.
- **Forensic Anthropology**: Analyze human bones for legal purposes.
- **Academic Research and Teaching**: Do research, write articles, and teach.

And here are some jobs where you can use anthropology skills:
- **Market Research**: Study consumer behavior and cultural trends.
- **Public Health**: Work on health issues considering cultural factors.
- **Human Resources**: Focus on organizational culture and diversity.
- **Urban Planning**: Create sustainable and culturally aware urban spaces.
- **International Development**: Work on projects related to education and community development.
- **Environmental Science**: Explore how humans interact with the environment.
- **Social Work**: Support individuals and communities in need.
- **Journalism**: Report on cultural and social topics.
- **Community Outreach**: Connect with communities and share educational resources.
- **Cultural Brokerage**: Bridge communication between different cultures.

Anthropology is a big field, so think about which area interests you the most. Start with the four main areas and look for internships and opportunities that match your interests.

I understand how hard this can be. Look for Summer internships locally. Take some practical classes (accounting, statistics, computer science) to gain knowledge. Talk to the job placement people at your school now to see what places might be offered what you are looking for.

Get involved in your town or nearby towns historical societies to learn about the local history and meet people who are interested in the past and present. These societies also usually have public programs you can attend as well. You will meet people with similar interests who you can also very likely answer questions about aspiring anthropologists.
