How can I stay motivated when entering a competitive field?
Im 17 years old and a senior in high school. I plan on majoring in journalism and aspire to build a career in sports journalism. I deeply enjoy writing and reporting, however I'm nervous about constantly meeting deadlines and coming up with relevant content to write about. Hello, Isabella !
You will be happy to know that motivation is not connected to whether or not a career is competitive or not, it comes from your level of passion and strong drive towards the career. You may be worried about this because you haven't started your education and training to become a Journalist yet and you're relying on just thoughts about it. Soon enough you will start college and things will seem different for you.
What you can do now and through the summer before starting college is to learn more about the career. Don't worry about deadlines because you have met deadlines all your life so far and you can do it in college, as you move forward and for a career. Since you do not know much yet about where you'll actually be working, it's best to stay in the present and focus on writing or broadcasting, video and researching.
As a way to stay active and not project worry, think about doing some volunteer work this summer. This will keep you busy, productive and inspired. Your town of Alhambra, CA offers volunteer work and internships in Finance, Human Resources, Community Development, Management Services, Parks & Recreation, and the Alhambra Civic Center Library. Also, Step Up Tutoring is seeking volunteers to provide virtual 1-on-1 tutoring to 2nd-6th graders in underserved communities. Once you are in college, you can apply for Federal Student Financial Aid and choose the Work Study option, getting a work study job in the Journalism Department of your college. Speak to the Financial Aid officer about this.
Just as your schedule was different five years ago, it'll be different in college again and scheduling everything will come naturally to you. Your life and tasks are going to be ever changing and there's really nothing to worry about. Let things flow and set priorities. Start getting busy now so you'll have experience scheduling and completing tasks.
Focusing on your writing, doing volunteer work, eliminating worry about things that haven't happened yet and reporting on things that you are interested in, and even things you're not interested in, will get you in the positive habits that will help you discover the realities of a career in Journalism. You can make it happen !
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
