What jobs can you get with a Finance & Accounting degree, that isn't a banking job. And how to get these jobs? Do you work your way up the ladder, starting with an internship, or can you just start applying for career positions right out of college? #Spring25 ?
I'm a double major in Finance and Accounting at the University of Maine, I'm looking into internships with Enterprise and a couple of other companies, and in their presentations they show how you can start as an intern and work your way up the corporate ladder, I wasn't sure if this is the only realistic way. #Spring25

I want to share some thoughts and experiences about the many career paths a finance and accounting degree can open up beyond investment banking. After graduating with these degrees, I began my career in public accounting at Armanino Advisory, LLC. Over the past 20+ years, I've been lucky to gain a wide range of experiences in fields like tax, auditing, entertainment, and family businesses. Each area brought its own challenges and exciting chances, helping me grow both at work and in life. With a finance and accounting background, the options are endless. You can dive into roles in corporate finance, financial planning and analysis, management consulting, and many other areas that use your skills and knowledge.

Beginning with an internship can definitely be a great step toward moving up in a company. Take Enrique Lores, our CEO at HP Inc., for example—he began as an intern in Barcelona back in the late 1980s. While not every CEO starts this way, they all share a strong passion for excellence and skills that open doors to leadership.

If you have studied finance or accounting, you have a versatile skill set that can open doors to virtually every industry. The foundational knowledge in these fields is highly sought after, as every business needs professionals who can manage finances, analyze economic trends, and ensure regulatory compliance. This means that your career opportunities are vast and varied, ranging from corporate finance and investment banking to non-profit organizations and government agencies.
To further enhance your career prospects, consider upskilling in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and data analytics. These technologies are transforming the financial landscape, and having expertise in these areas can give you a significant competitive edge. For instance, understanding how AI can be used to predict market trends or how automation can streamline financial processes can make you an invaluable asset to any organization.
One excellent way to gain practical experience and start building your career is through internships. Internships provide hands-on experience, allowing you to apply your academic knowledge in real-world settings. They also offer a chance to network with professionals in your field, which can be beneficial for future job opportunities. If your schedule allows, seek out internships while you are still studying. This proactive approach can help you gain a foothold in the industry and make you more attractive to potential employers.

Hi Nathan,
Starting as an intern can be a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable experience with a company. It helps you see if the company is a good match for you. But remember, it's not the only path. I didn’t do an internship during college because I was too busy. After I graduated, I focused on applying for jobs and landed a full-time position. From there, I worked my way up.
Not having an internship doesn’t put you at a disadvantage compared to your peers. Even if they have some prior knowledge, you’ll soon find out that everyone has a lot to learn when starting out.

Hi Nathan,
An internship is definitely one way to go! It's a great way to get your foot in the door and for some companies, this can lead to a full-time job. I was able to get my job through working a summer internship with an accounting firm. However, there are other options as well. You can look into a bookkeeping job or an A/P or A/R job. My best recommendation is to look through job postings or attend career fairs. At career fairs, you can meet with several different companies and understand what they are looking for in their employees.
