What is the best way to make a great first impression and further impressions on a college professor to make yourself stand out as a leader and gain further opportunities?

I am still a senior in high school, however I got into Purdue's College of Agriculture. I am majoring in Animal Science on a pre-vet track and I plan to minor in Fermentation Sciences. I have always been a huge community member who loves to be out there and support many others. I would love to find the many opportunities that Purdue has!

Peter’s Answer

Make a great first impression by being attentive, arriving on time, asking thoughtful questions, and listening carefully. Genuine interactions stand out—avoid acting just to impress. Show real curiosity about others, and be interested in their work and opinions.

Sarah’s Answer

To leave a strong first impression on a college professor and shine as a leader, always come prepared, be on time, and stay active in class. Join in discussions with good ideas, take the lead in group projects, and don't hesitate to introduce yourself early, perhaps during office hours. Share your passion for the subject and your eagerness for future chances. Keep in touch regularly, act with honesty, and be someone they can count on.

Madison’s Answer

It's awesome that you want to make connections while in school!

The best way to do this is to communicate! Professors appreciate students who participate in class, so don't hesitate to raise your hand to ask or answer questions. You don't need to know all the answers or be right every time, but showing interest in the material and wanting to engage can help you stand out.

Visiting office hours is also a great way to connect with professors on a personal level. You can ask them about the material, their career journey, and any advice they have. Building these connections can help grow your network and lead to new opportunities.

Don't just focus on professors! Join different clubs on campus to meet people your age and those in your field. They might have opportunities you can explore.

Good luck with school next year!

Casey’s Answer

The best way to stand out is to participate, ask questions, be vocal. Alot of times other people share the same questions as you but don't want to speak up. Teachers know that. So you can lead the pack! To get more opportunities, ask for them. Again, be vocal and ask for what you need.

E'Delana’s Answer

To really shine in front of your professors, show true interest in the course and in doing well. Professors have lots of experience and can easily spot when you're being real. Try staying after class to introduce yourself and let them know you're open to volunteer work or extra credit. These simple steps show you're eager to learn and grow, which makes a big impact.
