Hello, Otgoo !

It's okay that you haven't decided upon a major just yet, one will come to you when you are ready and inspired. I do see that your tags here indicate an interest in STEM Education, however, and that is a start for exploring various careers.

Although no one can tell you what to major in, you'd have to discover that on your own. There are ways to explore STEM Education and other careers to spark the inspiration. You should choose a career first and then the Major. Your Major will need to be what prepares you for the career. If your public high school is limited in resources, there may be a way for you to explore beyond what may or may not be at your fingertips right now.

Since there are 42 colleges and universities in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, I would suggest that you seek information at some of the colleges and universities. You can go for tours and orientations at various colleges and also read about different programs including the Education and STEM related majors at these colleges. It will help greatly once you decide upon the career to match up the Major with. You can also explore videos about careers through watching videos on You Tube once you decide on some careers you're interested in.

Remember that only you can choose a career and that will determine what you'd major in at college. Do not feel rushed about this, take your time. Universities and colleges in your country do require that you enroll with a Major, so you may have to wait a while until you decide upon a career so you can enroll with a suitable Major, one that will be pertinent to a career. Please do not pick a major just to pick one and being able to enroll. Explore careers now and if you do not get inspired, take a year off to do more exploring. Getting your degree in a subject that is random will not benefit you in the future. It's okay to take some time off before you enroll with a required major that will be good for your future.

I would not suggest doing quizzes to see what career you should have because for your circumstances, that is too random and your college requires a major that you will follow through with. You can also explore careers by volunteering at hospitals and teaching English to children which are what many teens volunteer at in your country.

So visit some of the Universities and use their resources and take orientations, visit various major departments and see if you gain inspiration. You're going to have to have a genuine interest and love for the career you end up doing, so if you need to take some time before enrolling in college, it will be a good idea to do so.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Hi Otgoo,

First of all, I want you to take a deep breath and acknowledge that while this is a heavy decision, you do not need to have everything figured out at this age! Heck, even as we get older, our opinions, beliefs, and decisions evolve and our life choices also change. So try your best to take the pressure off of yourself (easier said than done, obviously) and realize that you will end up where you are meant to be.

Now, getting more granular! I encourage you to consider these two questions when thinking about a major:
1. What am I good at?
- Which courses did you excel in? Don't ignore that!
2. What do I enjoy?
- What excites you about what you're learning? More importantly, what are you passionate about?

When it comes to your career, which is several years down the line, these are the two questions that I encourage candidates to consider when they are deciding what career to go into, and I believe it also applies to picking which major you will study. You want to pursue something that you are good at, because that does matter, but you also want to explore something that gives you excitement and a sense of purpose.

I hope this helps, and wishing you the best of luck!

I didn’t really have a major selected until I was in my third year of college. If you aren’t sure what you’re going to do, you can start college and take your core requirements while also taking electives and trying to figure out what you enjoy.

During that time, you can also attend career fares and talk with people about their jobs to see if something fits. I know it may seem like it, but you don’t have to have everything figured out right now.

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. The most important is to find out what careers you have interest.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what you have interest, eg your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc and identify the related careers
Eg if you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore any Mongolian universities offer relevant courses & entry criteria. Alternatively, you can explore the universities in mainland China
Hope this helps! Good luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Eric’s Answer

Choosing a major can be challenging, and it's normal for it to change as you learn and grow. I suggest exploring all your options and thinking about what you truly enjoy. Your major should reflect your interests. If you love science, consider a science major. If reading and writing excite you, maybe a language major is right for you. The ideal career is one where you get paid to do what you love. Let your passions lead you to the right choice. Good luck!

Cortina’s Answer

Hello Otgoo! I'm so glad we can chat about this. Picking a major is an important decision, and it's great to choose something you truly enjoy. There are online tests that can help you discover your interests, and it's also good to think about what you're naturally good at. Talking to your school advisor can be really helpful too. Remember, when you start school, you have the chance to explore different subjects while taking your general courses. This gives you time to decide what you want to focus on. Make sure to use all the resources available, like your high school and college advisors, to help guide you.
Thank you comment icon Great advice ! In Mongolia, students are required to enroll with a set Major in order to be admitted to University or college. Michelle M.
