James Constantine’s Answer

Hello Mary,

To work in clinical management in Texas, it's best to be a licensed social worker with a bachelor's, but preferably a master's degree. A Master of Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is essential for your career in mental health social work. Texas and most other states require this degree before you can take licensing exams.

If you don't have a degree yet, you can start as an assistant, an unqualified carer or an intern. Having a degree allows you to legally provide mental health care and supervision.

For more information, visit these resources:

Take care!
Thank you comment icon Thanks, because my Bachelor degree is Criminal Justice with a minor in Human Services. My master's degree is in Criminal Justice and I am going back to college for another master's degree, but this time as a mental health counselor. Mary
Thank you comment icon Yes, Mary that way you are legally allowed to deal with mental health crises with a licensed social worker (in mental health) Masters. James Constantine Frangos

Hi Mary,

Good question! Even without mental health certificates (yet), you're in a good position to look into rewarding entry-level, remote employment because of your solid educational background in criminal justice and human services and your present enrollment in a clinical mental health program. There are a number of work-from-home options that can provide you with experience, flexibility, and money while you finish your studies, even if some positions might eventually require a license.

Look at the following kinds of remote jobs for your consideration:

1. Mental Health Administrative Assistant or Client Services Coordinator
Numerous telehealth organizations and private offices require assistance with scheduling, client intake, follow-ups, and basic record-keeping. These support positions would greatly benefit from your education and Human Services experience.

2. Crisis Line/Text Line Support
There are paid or volunteer crisis line/text assistance roles available through certain national or nonprofit mental health organizations. Although training is often offered, certification is not necessarily necessary, and the experience is highly beneficial if you intend to work as a counselor.

3. Behavioral Health or Social Services Case Assistant
Some of these positions are now remote or hybrid, but they are becoming more common in healthcare and charitable companies. In addition to managing client-licensed professional communication, you could assist in tracking client progress and coordinating referrals.

4. Remote Academic or Career Coach (with a criminal justice focus)
Given your master's degree and teaching background, you may be able to assist students with their professional or academic growth, particularly those pursuing related counseling or criminal justice programs.

5. Research or Program Assistant for Public Health or Mental Health Projects
Look for community mental health projects, NGOs, or university programs that may require assistance with online system management, outreach, literature reviews, or data input.

These positions can help you develop your resume and confidence as you prepare to become a clinical mental health professional in the future while you are still in school. Additionally, even at the entry level, many employers will value the maturity and skill set you bring because you are pursuing this while already having advanced degrees.

Keep visiting sites like Indeed, Handshake, and Idealist, and don't be afraid to contact instructors or career services at your university. They may be aware of groups seeking assistance that fit your goal.

You're obviously motivated and considering your options carefully; keep going. You're creating something significant.

Best wishes!
