Laura’s Answer

In my experience working with multiple fashion designers, they were all willing to start at the bottom, work their way up. This mostly meant working for an established designer and learning techniques in creating garments, learning the audience (customer) you're trying to appeal to and exploring the public relations in house, or out, to learn how to promote, and market your product. Compiling your sketches of some of your best designs can be a good way to get your foot in the door. Going in person, if possible, shows a sign of your drive and ambition to learn and achieve. There will be obstacles, not every designer you visit will take time for you, but don't give up. Your greatest achievements in life will come from persistence and hard work! Do your best, positive attitude, you'll get ahead!!

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know that you have interest in fashion design.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Watch the fashion shows of famous fashion designer online.
2. Learn fashions techniques. There are resources online. Do your own design.
3. Attend information session hosts by prestigious design school and explore the entry criteria. Work hard to meet the criteria.
4. Explore any intern opportunities in famous fashion house.
5. Pay attention to latest fashion trends. Do window shopping on the design of popular fashion brands.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hello, Natalia !

Fashion is an awesome field of work to learn about and makes for a very satisfying and enjoyable career in which you meet a lot of people and use your creative skills. The first thing that you're asking about it is what are the negatives about it. The reason that it would be impossible to say is because every Fashion Designer has their own unique experience with it and so would you.

It would be more like learning the consequences in life first and you could avoid them in a career or any other aspect of life. Then again, life is spontaneous and we're not supposed to know what's going to happen, especially when we are just first getting information about the actual career. It may be more useful to you if you state the actual concerns you may have about being a Fashion Designer rather then have a list of negatives that may or may not happen in your specific career.

Once you get a better understanding of the fashion industry and the role of a Fashion Designer, and you still have that passion and drive to pursue this career, nothing will stop you.

Something that you can do now to learn the skills for fashion design would be to take as many Family and Consumer Science (with an emphasis on sewing) classes as you can, at your current school through high school. If your schools offer a Drawing or Sketching class, that would be helpful also. After graduating high school, you should attend Fashion School to get the necessary preparation and understanding about how to start your career. You will learn by doing and no one can say what your experiences would be like.

Instead of needing warnings about things that may never happen, you can have some real fun by putting your talent into action. Start sewing and consider learning how to make accessories also. The best way to make discoveries for a career is to be active with the necessary information, steps to becoming a fashion designer and developing a social circle of like minded friends.

An awesome way for you to start discovering this career would be to contact The Garment League, which offers the Fashion Industry Youth Initiative ! It's a fabulous program that offers fashion education with STEM and literacy, providing training in fashion illustration, design, and technical construction, preparing students for careers in the fashion industry. You will not have to wonder about this career any more if you apply and participate with this program. I left a link below to a page that has information about it for you.

Such as in life, there are challenges we all face, some may be positive challenges and some may not. It's going to be your personal, social and professional growth that will teach you how to handle things that come up. I think most of us had to learn this way. So do not worry. You have a fabulous road ahead with meeting lots of people and learning more about what it means to be a professional fashion designer. Give yourself room to experience it all for yourself !

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best on your journey !

Phill’s Answer

Hey Natalia,

It is great that you are considering the consequences of being a fashion designer. It can be a great, exciting, and creative career path. There are numerous fields you can get into within the fashion industry. This can be from designer, photographer, to fabrics, sketching, advertising, managing, etc. This can be something you find out as you go about your journey. In general, it can be an industry that can be fast paced and exciting. If you go to the design route, you might find yourself in the creative process, creating from sketching and prototyping, to modeling and presentation. Many design fields tend to be competitive, and fashion tends to have a reputation to be competitive. However, this truly depends on how you go about your studies. In order to gain connections in the design world, you must make relationships with people in and out of your specific industry. This can be from other students to working professionals. In order to make these connections, you have to network at events and places where the industry gather. This can be from fashion shows to galleries. Start compiling companies and designers that inspire you, both large and small scale. Reach out to places to show your interest and for a potential internship. It is great to get as much experience as you can. This can be from just helping to hands on designing. This can even be in an industry that is not specifically for you, but can help you gain skills that you would need for the industry of your choice. If the over all goal is to make your own pieces, than make sure you keep creating no matter what!

Best of luck on your journey!

James Constantine’s Answer

Good Day Natalia!

You shall require technical drawing skills to conceive garments. A top of the line laptop or computer would be an advantage to display your designs. You may not be the person sewing, you may join an existing company temporarily to gain skills. That way you can utilize their promotional agents!

The consequences of being a fashion designer are that you will eventually have a brand name that is exclusively yours, an creation that bears your name. To get in touch with the right promoters you will need to network with people in that industry. Networking methods include: - Contributing articles to fashion publications and communication media such as popular women's magazines. Indeed, LinkedIn ‣ Joining a networking group ‣ Utilizing social media ‣ Letting people pick your brain at seminars answering questions ‣ Growing a database of new friends in the industry, and professional business contacts ‣ Joining industry groups ‣ Attending conventions and conferences ‣ Sending cold emails ‣ Setting up informational interviews ‣ Offering assistance / volunteering ‣ Attending group networking events to introduce yourself ‣ Attending industry-related conferences ‣ Joining online communities ‣ Participating in online forums ‣ Meeting new contacts for coffee ‣ Going to industry expositions and meetings.

Sanchita’s Answer

If you’ve been dreaming of fashion design since elementary school, you absolutely have to give it a shot—otherwise, you’ll always wonder "what if."
Every career has its share of initial hiccups and challenges, but if you stay disciplined and focused on your goals, you can navigate them. The most important thing is to have the courage to chase the opportunity.

If things don't work out exactly as planned, don't worry; the world is full of backup options. In fact, many successful people in User Experience (UX) design actually started in fashion! The skills you learn—like understanding aesthetics and customer needs—transfer perfectly to designing digital screens and experiences.

Give your dream a fair chance first; you have plenty of time to pivot later if you choose.
