Bob’s Answer

I think that Austin’s answer was spot on and great advice. The only thing that I would add is that you should take full advantage of your college’s career services office and attend any info sessions or networking events and get to know the representatives from the accounting firms attending.

Good luck!

Bob

Sam’s Answer

I would like to echo Bob's point of attending info sessions and networking events on campus. I attended quite a few networking and info sessions when I was in school and found them to be very helpful as it allowed me to build relationships with representatives from different firms to see who I connected with. It also allowed me to meet some individuals that I might be working with.

In addition, I would recommend looking to see if there is an accounting club on campus. They might hold additional recruiting events events where you can connect with representatives from accounting firms and participate in different activities.

Good Luck!

Sam

John’s Answer

I can discuss how it is to be recruited by a company during college. This is one of the best ways to find a job for after college. These recruiters are on campus to hire students just like you, it can be a scary prospect, but they want to hire people who can be calm under pressure, so try to be relaxed. My strategy was to make myself seen anytime they were on campus. As a side effect, this also helped me get more comfortable talking to the recruiters. On my nearly weekly visits, I would always come in with at least one question, so they knew I was interested. I ended up receiving offers from all of the companies I was actively trying to be recruited by. Good luck with your job hunt.

John recommends the following next steps:

Talk to recruiters on campus for the first time
Go again next week!
Eventually.... get hired!

Hi Rachel! The other answers focusing on internships, GPA, accounting clubs, on campus-recruiting touch points, and working on interpersonal skills are great!

I would like to add that companies are also interested in what makes YOU unique! If you have a passions outside of accounting and actuarial science I would continue to fit these into your college experience. It's a great way to stand out and make yourself memorable if you can talk about your spring break volunteer trip, work on the school newspaper, role in student government, fun hobby, etc.!

Austin’s Answer

Hi Rachel,

It's great to hear that you are studying accounting and actuarial science as those are great majors that have very strong job prospects. Getting a job after college isn't the easiest thing to do in life, but it is made much easier if you take the right steps during college.

First of all, getting good grades is the most important part. Many, if not all, of the most selective firms use your GPA as a good way to deciding between candidates. If you go through on-campus recruiting (which you definitely should), companies decided on whether or not to interview you largely based on what your GPA is. Many people submit their resumes to a company for on campus recruitment, and GPS is one of the easiest ways for companies to "weed out" those that they do not want to interview. Getting a good GPA will ensure that your resume is read when you submit it to employers. For example, a job that I applied to be recruited for required a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Another way of standing out during college in order to get noticed by potential employers is to do some internships. Internships are a great way of getting relevant work experience and will allow you to put things on your resume. Employers like to see that you have the necessary skills and work experience and internships are the easiest way to demonstrate this to an employer. Furthermore, firms often recruit their employees from former interns. So if you end up interning at a place that you like, that internship may serve as a pathway to full time hire. Personally, I had an internship right after college and after 3 months I was offered the job full time. Going from an internship to a full time hire actually happens pretty frequently so it is a real possibility.

There are definitely other things that will increase your chance of standing out to a potential employer, but I would say that a good GPA and having relevant internships are the two most important aspects.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!!

Best,

Austin

Parshva’s Answer

That's a great question, Rachel. Make the 4 years at college count, use all resources at your disposal to invest in yourself - both in terms of hard skills and soft skills. At the end of the day, something that makes you really standout are your interpersonal skills and ability to learn quickly. Make sure you are able to showcase all of this in your conversations with recruiters/interviews. Take advantage of the career services at your college to perfect your resume.
