Hi!
I would encourage you to volunteer with after-school programs and summer programs targeting the age group you are interested in. For example, Boys and Girls Club often offer before/after school as well as summer programs. Further, I would look to see if your community offers a community education program that targets these groups. Finally, I would contact a local school first via phone call to see if they offer opportunities for high school students wishing to pursue education (easier option - contact YOUR elementary school! They know you so you have a foot in the door). If you are able to volunteer at an elementary school, make sure you are dressed appropriately and thank the administration for providing you with the opportunity.

In my opinion, visit some elementary schools in your area, public and private. Just walk in the door and tell the administration what your career goals are and ask if there is a teacher that you could talk to about teaching elementary education. With a little luck, you will get the chance. Dress appropriately, and have a notepad listing questions you wish to ask. With even more luck (but it isn't always luck, behavior and appearance have a lot to do with this), you may be invited to visit a class. And again, visit as many schools as you can in order to obtain different perspectives. All the best.
