Are there any online certifications or courses that would benefit me if I am interested in working within marketing and hopefully in the entertainment business?

I am a college student who has always thought it would be fun to work within the entertainment business whether for music like Spotify, Republic Records or Warner Brothers, Netflix etc. I do not have much experience or knowledge on how to learn about this career.

Hello Kathryn. Yes, there are many good online certifications and courses that can help you if you want to work in marketing and the entertainment business. Since you are a college student and still learning about this career, taking online courses is a great way to start building your skills. These classes can teach you how marketing works, especially in areas like social media, branding, and digital advertising.

Online courses are also flexible, so you can take them while studying in college. Many are low-cost or even free. They also give you hands-on experience, you can learn how to run social media campaigns, create digital content, or understand audience data. Earning a certificate shows future employers that you are serious about learning and growing in this field. It's a great way to stand out when applying for internships or entry-level jobs.

Some good places to start are Google Digital Garage, HubSpot Academy, and Coursera. These platforms offer beginner-friendly courses in digital marketing, social media strategy, content creation, and analytics. You could also explore classes that focus on entertainment marketing, influencer branding, or public relations to understand how these fields connect.

As you learn, you can try to use your new skills in real situations. You can help a student club promote events, create social media posts for a local business, or even start your own small project online. This kind of practice will help you gain confidence and real experience.

Hello, Kathryn !

If you want a career in Entertainment Marketing, you would major in Marketing, Communications or Business in college an obtain your Bachelors Degree. The certifications that exist for this career are Entertainment Marketing Certification (UCLA Extension), International Entertainment & Sports Marketing (Coursera), Entertainment Marketing & Media Management, and Hubspot Inbound Marketing Certification.

It is a rather high-pressure, high energy type work, but you can find out on a local scale what it is like by doing volunteer work at film and television studios, and recording studios. This career requires sharp marketing skills as well as knowing how each niche of the entertainment industry is run. It may take some time to learn it all, but I would advise taking the time. You also may want to consider relocating to larger markets once you have strong experience and your degree.

You will need skills for Digital Marketing & Social Media Expertise, Creative and Content Creation Skills, Project Management, and Networking and Communication.

Places you'd need to attend, network and make contacts at for this career are Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, SXSW (South by Southwest), The Entertainment Marketing Summit, Content Marketing World Conference, and MIPCOM.

In addition to these requirements, join professional associations. Organizations like the Entertainment Marketing Association or the Public Relations Society of America offer resources, networking opportunities, and certification programs that can help you stay ahead of industry trends. Membership in these associations will boost your credibility, too.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Hi Kathryn,

I know this is not a course specifically, but I would recommend attending events in your area related to entertainment and get involved by volunteering for future events or even just solely networking and making contacts. Ask who the event producer is and don't be afraid to introduce yourself!

Steve’s Answer

You've got some great answers here, and I'd love to add a few more thoughts.

Online education can be challenging for subjects that require hands-on learning, but it's still a great way to explore your interests. You can find online classes to learn specific skills like editing, photography, or visual effects. In the end, storytelling and connecting with an audience emotionally are key, and these skills develop over time. With the right mentorship and guidance, you'll gain a deeper understanding of communication and entertainment.

If you have the opportunity, taking courses at a local college or university might offer even more value.

Wishing you the best on your journey!
