Is Microbiology a good major for a Physician Assistant?

My long term goal is to become a Physician Assistant and I am wondering if Biology or Microbiology is a better major to study to prepare me to apply to graduate school to become a physician assistant.

Mitzio,

You can have any undergraduate major to be able to apply to PA schools. So, if biology or microbiology is something you're really interested in, I encourage you to choose that major. For PA school application, each PA program has specific prerequisite course requirements, so it would be helpful to look at the requirements of the program(s) you're interested in, to minimise needing to take extra classes on top of your undergraduate degree.

For the PA program I attended, for example, the prerequisites included biology, chemistry, psychology, and statistics, among many others. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help with.

Good luck!

Hi Mitzio,

Biology, microbiology, chemistry or biochemistry are all good majors if you want to go to PA school. They'll give you the scientific foundation to be in the healthcare field and cover many of the pre-requisites.

There is no required major for your bachelors but you must pass a list of pre-requisite courses. You need to look up with courses are required for each school. I gave you links to University of Southern California and Southern California University of Health Sciences in your other post.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hi! I would definitely recommend choosing a major that requires a majority of PA school prerequisite classes! Usually a biology major satisfies quite a few classes required for most PA schools. It's best to check out schools you're interested in, write down their prerequisite classes, and compare them to classes required for majors at your university/college. Good luck!
