What is the best way to stand out?

I want to become an engineer for Rolls Royce but, being such a large company, what is the best way to mark myself for success? I know that I can pursue this dream, but how should I let companies and employers know that I can? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Fahad Elahi’s Answer

To stand out at a big company like Rolls Royce, focus on building a strong foundation with relevant experience and skills in aerospace and power systems. Start by seeking internships or apprenticeships, as they offer programs for students and those early in their careers. Doing well in these roles can lead to full-time positions. On your resume, highlight any hands-on projects, like building models or working in labs, and get certifications in areas like CAD or quality management to show your initiative. Network by attending industry events or connecting with their engineers on LinkedIn. Ask for informational chats to learn more and express your interest. Tailor your applications to show how your skills align with their focus on innovation and sustainability. Prepare for interviews by practicing technical questions. Remember, persistence pays off, and many succeed through consistent effort and proving reliability.

William’s Answer

Hi Owen,
You have an excellent mindset. Winning starts with mentality and progressively becomes a culture. Your potential is the starting point. Realizing it fully depends on the sincere effort you put in. You need to identify what you are good at and pursue it with excellence. More effort will be required in areas where you need improvement. Continuous improvement, curiosity, passion, commitment, perseverance, positive attitude, team spirit and interest are some of the important traits you need to embed in your work ethic.
Being your very best self should be your ultimate goal as it can easily pit you against the very best.
It's important to start putting into practice what you learn through internships, mentorships and projects at the earliest opportunities available. Practice gives you the chance to learn through experience. Experience informs you about the limitations of the existing generation of technology. Opportunities for innovation for the next generation of technology can be life-changing.

Brian’s Answer

Hi Owen,

Large companies sometimes have internship or apprentice track programs for people such as yourself to gain some experience. However something I recommend is broadening the scope of who you are willing to work for at first. It will likely be difficult to land your first job, i recommend looking for smaller manufacturing companies that work in somewhat similar industries to Rolls Royce, and use that experience to move to a different position closer to your end goal.
Thank you comment icon I really appreciate the insight Brian, is there any advice that you have for balancing an internship with school and work? If not thanks for the help either way! Owen
