I'm a freshman working toward a bachelor's in nursing (BSN) and I'm interested in pediatric-related research and pediatric oncology. Are there opportunities to get involved in related research as a nursing student in NJ?
I'm interested in getting experience to work in pediatrics in the future and very interested in participating in research, but I don't know how to go about finding opportunities.

Hello, Alexanfra R !
Well, nursing programs in New Jersey offer research opportunities for students. Faculty at The College of New Jersey and Rutgers University actively involve students in research, with opportunities for co-authoring publications and presenting at national and international conferences. So are you attending either College of New Jersey or Rutgers ?
If you are attending one of these two colleges, you would have to inquire about research opportunities by asking your professor or the department chairperson. Just ask right there at the college for the information. If you are not attending College of New Jersey or Rutgers that has research opportunities for their students. you may have two options.
If you ask your Nursing Program if they involve you in research and they say no, then consider looking into Rutgers or College of New Jersey to attend. If doing research is just a fleeing thought, then continue at the college you are currently studying at. If you want to do research but don't want to leave your current college if they don't provide opportunities, consider doing independent research. Find out from your professors how credible it would be to do it independently (not affiliated with a university or medical place) and explore opportunities for it through The Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Also PubMed Central, The National Institute of Nursing Research, Scopus, and Web of Science. Also ask your professor if you do research can you get a unit of credit for doing it as a Practicum.
So, a decision you will have to make if your current college does not offer research for their Nursing students would be to consider transferring to Rutgers or College of New Jersey, stay at your current college and do research independently which may be kind of difficult as nursing programs can be very demanding and require lots of time.
You will also need to know how to do research and how to do it for pediatrics or whatever topic you find that needs research. It's not a term paper you'd be writing. You'd have to do something that needs exploring and justify the research. You can find guidance on how to do research online by typing it in a search. You also will have to be familiar with medical terminology, medical metrics, medical jargon.
I hope this is helpful and I wish you all the best !
