Working hard is important, but how you treat people matters. Someone you work with today could be your boss tomorrow. Likewise, you might get promoted and need the respect of those you are around.

I didn’t do the best job of treating others well early in my career and it held me back.

Just be mindful of your relationships :)

Biggest lesson I learned is that forming good relationships at work is very important. Networking and having people around you who support you and want to see you succeed can take you very far.
You need to work hard and build a good brand but an important step to building a brand is networking with leaders!

Having a work-life balance is so important. Yes, you want to do your best and prove yourself as a strong employee, especially after just getting started. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going above and beyond, especially if your career aligns with your passions. With that said, do not over extend yourself or fall into the habit of sacrificing your social life for work. Maintain appropriate boundaries between work and the rest of your life. You can be a stellar employee AND maintain healthy connections to your other life roles (i.e., family member, friend, self-care, etc.).

Hi Yan Fang,

A hard truth is that if you're comfortable, you're not growing! If you want to evolve as a person and in your career, you'll have to do things that may scare you, like...
- Presenting your ideas to your boss.
- Having a tough conversation with a coworker .
- Taking exams for additional certification or licensure.
- Leading a project, initiative or committee at your job.

All of these things can be difficult to do, but they will be so rewarding in the end. Remember that everyone is scared to get out of their comfort zone, but the determined ones do it anyway! I know you can do it too!

The most important thing I've learned is how crucial it is to build strong relationships at work. Having a network of supportive people who want you to succeed can really help you go far. While working hard and creating a good personal brand is important, connecting with leaders is a key part of that journey.

Also, I strongly encourage you to find a job you truly enjoy. It's important to choose work that energizes you, so you don't feel burned out too quickly.

Hi Yan Fang. Thanks for this awesome question.

One important lesson I have taken with me to every new job I have ever had is that just because a job or task seems repetitive, doesn't mean you can't learn from it. Some of my biggest achievements have come from tasks that seemed repetitive or even non-sensical. Like any good practice session, the more often you do something the more you understand the process of how to do that thing. As an engineer, I was able to sift out pieces of a process that could be improved...and then, I improved that part of the process.

If you expose yourself to enough opportunities to improve what seems mundane, you can build a strong and positive reputation as someone who can identify ways to make things better. My experience is that employers have a great appreciation for employees who can make things run better.

1. Communication - This includes both verbal and written communications
2. Team Work - We always work in teams.
3. Time Management - This is important to utilize our time effectively and also ensure work life balance.
4. Stakeholder Management - We have to ensure the needs and expectations of stakeholders are considered, helping build trust, reduce risks, and improve outcomes.
