If I want to pursue entrepreneurship, what steps should I take after I graduate?

Hi! I am currently in junior year of high school (#co2027) and am interested in entrepreneurship. I already have a business idea which is a cafe dedicated towards supporting mental health. I haven't seen a place like that before and would love to make one come true. I'm wondering how can I achieve this goal after I graduate?

Rebecca’s Answer

I am excited to learn about your interest in entrepreneurship. Having such ambition at an early stage is truly commendable. Entrepreneurship is an exciting path, but it also requires a strong understanding of several important areas.

I would encourage you to consider studying entrepreneurship or a related field after high school. This will help you build knowledge in business strategy, operations, financial modeling, market research, identifying customer segments, testing ideas, and developing a solid business plan. These foundational skills are essential for starting and sustaining a successful venture.

In the meantime, take advantage of your current environment. Speak with your teachers about your ideas and seek constructive feedback. Their guidance can help you refine your thinking. You can also connect with professionals on LinkedIn or other networking platforms who are already working in the field you are interested in. Learning from their experiences can provide valuable insights and direction.

Most importantly, stay curious, remain open-minded, and be willing to learn continuously. Entrepreneurship is a journey of growth, experimentation, and resilience.

Morgan’s Answer

Hi Christie,

If possible, I would reach out to the the cafe that has inspired you to see if they have any opportunities for an internship or shadowing. That would be a great time to ask questions and learn from those that are working in that type of setting. For anyone wanting to own their own business, I think it is important to take courses centered around business. It is important that you understand the importance of accounting, marketing and generalized business.

How to Become an entrepreneur

Adopt an Entrepreneurial Mindset. ...
Find a Niche or Idea. ...
Build Your Network. ...
Validate Your Business Idea. ...
Write a Business Plan. ...
Fund Your Business. ...
Formalize and Launch Your Business. ...
Manage and Grow Your Business.

This is what I found BUT the best is to work in a small business, start-up business where you can learn from the start and from good smart people.
