How does it feel like to be a NICU nurse What are the good and bad parts of this job and how do you handle the bad parts of the job.?

Hello! I am a 8th grade student at Crane Middle School. I am interested in this because I enjoy learning about science and I’ve always wanted a job where I can help people through hard times. I think I would like this job because I would like helping parents when they need it and helping the babies get through hard times. I was wondering how many years of school it took you to get your degree? What is the main things you do in this job for example the tasks you need to do most days in this career? Is it hard to take care of the parents and help them with their children at the same time? Is this job good for people even if they get annoyed or overwhelmed easily? How do you stay calm and supportive when you have to give parents difficult news about their baby?

I am not a medical professional but wanted to share a few thoughts. The best experiences I have had have been with medical professionals, especially nurses who shared factual information without adding their own feelings or opinions. I appreciated this the most because I felt the focus remained on science and medicine and not judging a person or their lifestyle . Also, nursing is a profession where I have consistently found the kindest people on the planet ! It must take enormous physical, mental, and spiritual strength to serve others the way they do ! Perhaps it is challenging to help and support others even when they are not being grateful ! It is not uncommon for nurses to encounter patients who are rude or angry or simply ungrateful. Being in a hospital, especially NICU is a very difficult time and nurses need to be extra patient and considerate.
It is wonderful that you have a desire to serve your community, specially via the NICU. I wish you well and hope you find the support you need for your journey.

Hello Isabella- In addition to the other answers, I suggest you use your high school years to build a good academic foundation. Take your classes seriously; even the ones that you are not that interested in. Learn how to study effectively and try to maintain a good GPA, as that will matter when you apply to colleges. At the same time, just do the best you can while also taking time to have fun and participate in extracurricular activities. Balance is key!
